This is a common situation with many compact point&shoot cameras. Larger and more expensive dSLRs have additional hardware that eliminates this "shutter lag".

You can eliminate much of the lag by anticipating the peak of the action. Press the shutter release button halfway to focus and meter, and hold it there until the moment, then press the shutter release button the rest of the way.

SOURCE: How do I get the camera to stop hesitating when

I suggest you take a back up of your camera memory card & after that format the card. If your memory card is virus infected or if he finish his life time working capacity then its happend. So 1st format it after that fix it back. Now reset the camera settings & try. I hope the problem will solve then, If not then go & buy a new memory card. Thnaks & waiting for your feedback.

Why does my canon power shot hesitate before taking a picture

It's probably acting normal. Every camera (in one of the auto modes) must focus before it takes the image. In low light situations, or low contrast situations (white dog against a white background), many cameras have difficulty finding focus. This causes a delay before the shutter clicks. Try taking your camera out on a nice sunny day and take a pic. If there's no delay, there's your answer. If in a low light situation, click your flash on. That may help a bit to reduce the delay.

How do I set the camera so I don't have a delay, I try to take a picture and there seems to be a delay and I miss the shot.

This is a common situation with almost all point-and-shoot cameras. The delay is because the camera has to do so much when you push the button. Bulkier and more expensive SLRs eliminate the delay by having more hardware to handle the various tasks.

You can reduce the delay by anticipating the action. If you know where the action is going to happen (a child blowing out the candles on a cake, or right in front of a soccer goal, for example) aim the camera there and press the shutter button halfway and hold it there. This meters the exposure and focuses the lens. Then when the action finally happens, press the shutter button the rest of the way. With the camera having done most of the work when you pressed the button halfway, there will be much less delay.

Again, the delay is a basic "feature" of the camera design. It can't be completely eliminated, but by pressing the shutter release halfway it can be reduced.

When you take a picture there is a delay before it finishes, so taking kids pics are out of the question..how can this be fixed or is it made that way

If you are referring to the delay when you press the shutter button and when the camera actually takes the picture, this is called "shutter lag" and is common to all point and shoot cameras. You need to learn the "half press". This means that you press the shutter button half-way and allow the camera to lock in the focus (it will beep). Then, while holding the button in, you can recompose the shot and when the moment is right, press the rest of the way for an "instant" (or close to it) shot.

What do I set my camera on to take great shots of a reunion and what do I set it on so there is not such a time delay between shots...it seems it takes too long for my camera to get ready for the next shot...

Why it takes long between the shots is because of the size of the file to be saved. So, to take pics faster reduce the size by reducing the resolution. Which you dont want as you want great pics. Choice is yours.

How to stop delay.

It sound like your ISO speed is set too low. I would bet you're taking pictures inside a building with few or not ambient light. Try changing the ISO to 400 or 800. You might also consider using the flash.

I hope this helps! Please post rating, if it does.

Miss all the action shots with this camera

The longest part of the shutter delay is caused by the autofocus mechanism. Most cameras will let you press the button half-way down and wait until the autofocus is locked. Then wait for the action to occur. When you press the button the remaining distance, there will be a shutter delay of about 0.2 seconds before the picture is taken. Using that technique will let you capture action shots. There is no way to improve shutter delay on any particular camera. The newer digital cameras are showing improvement in this area. Some are achieving autofocus lock in 0.4 seconds and shutter delay of an additional 0.1 seconds.
