Question about Sony Handycam DCR-DVD508 DVD Camcorder

1 Answer

In March (camera now 1.5 years old) after filming some stuff with the kids outside the camcorder function stopped working with the error "disc scratched". Well it was the same disc i'd been using with no problems. Tried a new disc fresh out of the package, same errors. So no more Camcorder functionality. About one week later camera wouldn't even turn on. Tried plugging it in to charge, charge light stayed on only 30 seconds, turned off and camera still won't turn on. Purchased new battery in May, tried charging... won't charge, camera won't turn on!

This was produced in 2010 so it has lasted well for its age. Time for a new one.

SOURCE: Sony Handycam DCR-HC30 2004 model

Your unit is a 2004 model. If it has never been used since then the battery is probably no good and will need replaced. Batteries discharge 20% on a monthly basis just sitting on the shelf so yours went dead a long time ago. Then if they are left in that state (dead) they sulfate which means that sulfur oxides transfer to the plates and form an insulating surface. At that point all the charging in the world is not going to bring it back. All you can do is get another one. They are available at most stores which sell electronics. Get a new battery and charge it per the instructions and try using it again. This should solve your problem. Good luck.

SOURCE: Draining battery

This camera has had problems with the primary switch block faulting. The camera will power up all by itself when unattended and drain the battery. Another symptom would be the battery refuses to charge fully because the camera must remain in the "OFF" mode for the charge process to begin. Sony in Laredo, TX is replacing these controls at little or no cost, I would call them to see if they will repair this for you. Hope this helps you. SOURCE: Error message in LCD Display of Video Camcorder

could be a few things. heads may need to be cleaned, they could also be wet due to condinsation. the take up reel table may be weak. These can be taken apart and the spring can be strecthed slightly to increase the clutch tension. the capstan motor could have failed or something like debris could be binding it's turning ability. one of the guides may have came off it's arm. sometimes these can be snapped back into place.

Same problem as written elsewhere. DVD508 - been good for a couple of years. Lately, while shooting, got an error "Disc access error". Later, disc unable to read disc. Error code C-13-02. Tried a new disc...

Well yes you are quite right, 1000's of people all over the world are having major problem with this silly idea of DVD disks being used in movie or any other cameras, DVD is simply not reliable enough to store data on like films, I am a big movie maker, have been over 30 years now, only will use 8mm Video tape, as I like my movies to work, not end up with no movie to look at.
I hope as many people as pos call Sony as I have and tell them we want 8mm tape only, no silly rubbish media, our film are too important to us I feel.

SONY HANDYCAM DCR-35E

I had the same problem. When I purchased my HDR-SR11 camera some four years ago, I was running XP and the PMB Disc Burning worked well. When I changed over to Windows 7 I kept bombing out like a lot of other users. The problem was that I was using an old version of PMB (3.0.00). I went to the Sony web site and downloaded the latest version of PMB with an upgrade (0810a.exe) This fixed my problem and the Disc Burn function workes perfectly now.

Sony DCR DVD101 Format Error

I had the same problem, but I didn't have any valueable data on the DVD-RW (which was a Sony brand disc, go figure...). So, I backed up all the videos on the disc, tried to format the disc to get it ready to be able to be used again, and got the whole "Access Error" when I was formatting the disc. I tried both the VR and Video format options, the Video option came back with teh "Access Error" while the VR option came back with "Format Error". I put the disc into my DVD burner in my computer and was going to try and format it manually. But, as the disc popped up in My Computer and I right-clicked on the disc icon, there were no options to format the disc, which is unusual. I tried it in a laptop that's about a year old (versus the other computer which was about 4 years old), and as I right-clicked on the disc, an option was entitled "Erase this CD-RW". Obviously this was not a CD-RW, but I tried it anyways, and bam, after about half a minute, the mini DVD-RW was formatted! After that, I put it in the Handycam DCR DVD101 drive, formatted it using the Video setting (my preference), and now it works.

So, moral of the story is...try and format the disc manually on a DVD burning enabled computer. If it doesn't work, try a newer computer. But that's all I have, hope this helps!

You gotta be kidding, you know they are stopping production of that film, right? Well, if you really want to try and repair, its probably the battery contacts in the film slot that are corroded, clean with a pencil eraser if you can reach them.

Canon DC210 Camera

The error message is because, either
1. the disc was initialised on another camcorder, or maybe a PC, or
2. The disc has a recording on it in a different TV system (PAL v SECAM).

From the above, it may be you're using the same disc in two camcorders. To be sure of seeing what's on your disc you need to keep it with the same camcorder from 'initialise' to 'finalise' .

To be able to see the disc on a PC you need to finalise it on the camcorder. There's no other way to get to see your work on a PC.

Unfortunately I think you've lost your recordings this time.
