The machine is jammed internally.
Open the printer and look for a foreign object such as a paper clip or torn piece of paper. If it is not this then there is a mechanical problem that need to go to shop for repair.
Look on page 157 of the owners manual. Let me know if you need the manual.
Let me know if this help.

Error 36

Hello there! I did the following: Unistall all drivers and reinstall them again. This will solve your problem. I got the same every 3 or 5 times and had to open covers as "jam paper", then the printer worked with similar problem (error 36). Now I unistalled the MFC suite and reinstalled the drivers and the printer works just fine. Regards

Hello. I have a Brother MFC-6490CW A3 printer, and this morning I was printing and the paper jammed, I removed what I could manually however there is still some paper jammed that I can remove. The...

Hi Good day!!!

The paper jam you had probably lifted the long, thin, plastic encoder strip in the pathway out of its slot, giving the false indication of a paper jam. In order to put it back in its place, please carry out the following steps:

1) Lift the cover and remove the two plastic panels covering wires. Mark down the position of cables, then remove them, and remove the now-freed top scanner
section entirely.

2) Remove the screws from the top plastic shell. There's two in the back and four in the front. There's also two plastic tabs in the front that must be bent aside before you can remove the top shell.

3) Gently put the encoder strip back in its plastic guide, and check if you are able to get your printer to work all right thereafter.

If you are not comfortable carrying out the steps, I would strongly suggest you to have it repaired by your local Brother service center, without causing further complications.

Don't forget to vote thanks!!!

Error code 36 is generally because of a paper jam that was not cleared. Remove the rear jam cover (the plastic cover in the back center of the machine)and the paper tray and check for any pieces of paper. Sometimes just a scrap will remain, but it's enough to cause the machine to not work.

Once you've replaced the covers, if the jam code does not reset, turn the machine off and then back on.

Brother MFC-6490CW printer error unable to print 36

Hello there
I think this is down to a bit of paper sticking some where, it worth a try anyway.

This may work for you, it has worked for many here I given this advice so gave it a try it could work for you.
Generally when this happens, something has fallen into the printer, or a piece of paper has been jammed in there.

First step, remove the ink cartridge, and turn the printer upside down and gently shake it, see if anything comes out.

If nothing goes, or you can't hear anything rattling around, get a piece of cardstock paper (60lb or heavier) and gently push this through the printer, to see if it will help push out what might be stuck in there.

And gave the rode that the ink slides on a good clean and maybe a bit oil on cloth and wipe the rod with it.

Also clean The purge unit, called a spittoon assembly in an HP, Lexmark, Caonon and other inkjet printers, is where the print head assembly parks when not in use, also its other job is to clean and make sure the print head is clean and open for printing.

That is where you'll find the print head assembly parked on top of it.
It also has an electrical pump to milk the print heads and test for ink flow.

So clean all under where the heads are parked and on IP6600D models you can take out the heads just by clipping them out, and then clean well.

Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

Brother MFC-6490CW printer error unable to print 36

Any of the 30 series errors say that the carriage is not free to move from side to side across the paper. You need to look close on each side of the machine where the carriage travels to see if there's a paper scrap stopping it. Also the encoder strip could be out of the slot in the carriage assembly. If all is OK you need a shop repair to determine if the logic or carriage pcb's are OK.

Wont work at all just says unable to print 36

"Machine Error 36" and "Unable to Print" are error messages indicating something physically making it impossible for the machine to work. Hopefully, you could find a stuck paper or parts of stuck paper by opening the different covers (front, back, paper trays etc), the problem should then be solved by removing the paper and rebooting your machine.
However, if this does not work or you're unable to find the stuck paper, you will need to have service on this unit, to open up the machine.
