Question about Western Digital Elements powered by WD 320 GB External USB (WDE1U3200N) Hard Drive

1 Answer

WD hard drive not opening

My elements hd has been perfect, now 5 months old, only 450 of 1TB memory full.

Regularily used with WD media player, and always properly 'removed' from computer and 'ejected' from player at transfers.

Today, upon reconnecting it to the computer it is recognised (but as local disc G, not as Elements) but will not function ..... cannot access at all.

I get a message that it requires formatting, which it clearly cannot need

Something might have happened to the driver. You might need to reinstall it.

I'm admittedly a bit stumped here.
    1. How long have you had it?
    2. Did you get a CD with the drive?
    3. How did you try to uninstall it and reinstall it?
    4. After uninstalling it, did you reboot your computer with the drive "unplugged from the USB port?
    5. When you reinstalled it, did you leave the drive unplugged until it had been reinstalled?
    6. After you plugged it in AFTER reinstalling it, did you try rebooting it and/or asking Windows to search for New Drivers? If so, was your computer hooked up to the Internet at the time and was it set to update automatically?
    7. Did you try running it by disconnecting from the Internet and then shutting down your firewall? If you were using more than one firewall did you shut both down?
    8. Did you change versions of windows since you copied the first files?
    9. Have you tried it in your other USB ports?
    10. Which version of Windows are you using?
    11. Have you tried running Scandisk on it with the "attempt recovery of bad sectors" checked off?
    12. Have you run a virus checker on it?
    13. Have you tried it on the computer of someone who is running Windows 7? If so, what happened? (If it worked there, it might be a good idea to run a virus checker on it from that location).
    14. Did you install any other new devices or cards since the last time the drive worked properly?
    14. If all of those failed, I wonder if a technician could check it out with a partition repair program if you don't have one.

Those are the things I would likely try. A good power bar also helps to protect your drives. I also shut my equipment down before thunderstorms because so many people have blown things that way. Hope there's still some hope for yours and that one of the above will solve your problem. Keep in touch. Good luck!

I have a WD media player and my HD crashed recently. I installed a new one but i now get an error message saying that my HD is not detected yet it works fine on the PC - please assist.

If it works OK on you PC and not in the WD, it suggests to me that you have the disk incorrectly formatted. Most media players use a Linux format not a windows format (fat or ntfs). Try deleting the partition in the PC and then format it with the WD. I presume that you replaced it with the same size disk as many of them will not use anything larger than the original size.

WD Elements ext.HD not visible in My Computer

Hello Graham

Ok, have you tried changing the drive letter of all the drives in the device manager? This is sometimes the cause for the drive not showing in My computer.

Let me know if you have tried this already, if not, do this, it might just work. It is a 320GB drive.

Kind regards

I ripped Bluray movies using "ANY DVD HD" to my hardrive then playing them through "WD TV Live HD Media Player" (using HDMI cable to Sony Bravia HD L.C.D.TV) some movies work good but others play the video...

Either check around in Any DVD HD or the BluRay menu to set audio output to PCM, which doesn't require any decoding to play back properly or you will have to convert them separately.

I have a WD Media player and a WD 1tb Hard disk they problem I have with them is I copy Movies to the hard disk but they do not show when I use the Media Player Can you suggest how I can view them Ian...

The movies have to be in the format that the media player can handle. If not, then they will not be visible, leave aside viewing them. You must download movies that are the same format as the player, eg, .mov or .wmv or whatever.

WD HD Media player damaged my hard drive??

Hi Dear! This problem could be solved through a software. You should use Western Digital Disk Manager, your WD hard disk will work properly after using that your WD hard disk pass all test of the software. When it will pass all test it will work properly and in other condition if it will not pass then you should try again so that the software will fix the error and it will made workable.
Thank You

Help! the green light flashes then nothing happens

The exact same thing just happened to me (WD elements 500 gig) and it's only about 10 months old. I called the customer help line (on the official website) and after they asked me what the serial number of my HD was they were going to send me a new power supply. Simple as that. They said they'd be able to send it out early next week. I'm hoping that the HD didn't get fried and it's just the power supply but what you've described is EXACTLY what is happening to mine.
