If it is an older machine, yes, the points are underneath the flywheel---it can be removed without a puller---just a little patience will get it off

No spark in my toro 38080 mod# snowblower, new plus, new gas ,fuel line, primer bulb, line, no spark

The Toro 38080 was made from 1979 - 1993.

With it not producing a spark then you have an ignition system problem. Depending which Tecumseh HM80 engine setup you have you may have either an internal ignition system or external. By this I mean under the flywheel or external to the flywheel. There was also hybrid system that was both internal and external.

This engine could either points based system or a CDI all in one coil pack.

Now if it is an internal points systems it will be major an under taking for someone that never worked on one these engines as if you replace the points the ignition system must be re-timed. Note that where a few fix time setups. You might get lucky and it just dirty contacts which can cleaned without up setting the timing. To gain access to these points the flywheel must be removed.

Probably the best to do first is to download a copy of the service manual to see if this something that you can do or if you what to get a small engine mechanic that is experienced with Tecumseh repair to do.

Ignition system info starts on PDF page 67 (manual page 63) in the following manual. It will explain on how to test and repair the systems involved.

Why is my Tecumseh 6.5 hp engine hard to start after taking blade off.?

When you tilt the mower too much oil will mix with gas. Try taking out the spark plug and cleaning it good in case some oil got on it. If this don't solve it, drain the gas and refill with fresh gas in case oil mixed with it when you tilted the mower.

take the flywheel off and look at the flywheel pin that sets in the shaft...if it is in alinment...then your timing is ok....if its off center or the pin is broke then replace it.

Wont start, have cleaned the carb, new filter, new spark plug. removed plug and grounded. Very tiny little sparks, not real single snapping spark. Any idea of what could be the problem? Ariens model...

I believe you have a timing problem. Do you remember hitting something hard with your blade? I would say you have sheared your timing key. Order of repair : remove top cover to engine, this may involve gas tank, gas line, oil filler tube. Remove flywheel nut, remove flywheel. Timing key is the small key between flywheel and crankshaft. Timing key may just be dented but it will need to be replaced. Bring it with you, Tecumseh has a few different styles of key depending on engine and year.
GOOD LUCK.

When trying to start, it seems that the engine fires early and yanks the cord right out of my hand.

You probably have a bent flywheel key. The timing is off and the engine.

You need to remove the pull cover and then the flywheel nut and lift off the flywheel and inspect the key. They are inexpensive to replace and available at local lawn equipment repair shops.

Good luck and be careful.

May be a blockage in the carburetor. If it's a briggs motor or tecumseh motor on it, check the flywheel key. On a briggs if the key is sheared you'll have no spark at all. If it's a Tecumseh and the key is sheared, you'll probably have spark, but this throws the timing off and could possible show signs of wanting to start, but may be pulling the pull cord handle out of your hand when it tries to catch. Be very careful of this. Tecumseh will give you a spark but if the key is sheared then it'll be the timing. Also, check the brake band on the flywheel and make sure the ground wire isn't off or shorted. Good luck.
