Soundsl like a setting problem. A lot of 40 gig units need to have a setting changed. First update your system then go to video settings there find one called BD 1080p 24Hz output (HDMI) set it to OFF. That may fix it it will fix movies that freeze up after about 5 minutes of play.

SOURCE: game stops
I bet your blu-ray lens is going bad. If your PS3 is backwards compatible, try putting in a PS2 game or Standard-Def movie. If it loads/plays just fine...that narrows it down to the blu-ray drive. This happened to me a few weeks ago. *NOTE* WhatEVER you do, DO NOT send your PS3 to PSR1. They stole $109 from me. They DO NOT fix your PS3. They lie. I am spending my free time right now trying to help people save money and not get ripped off like me.
