Question about HP Officejet 4315 All-in-One Printer
What OS are you using? HP uses the Win7 drivers for this printer and that doesn't communicate with the Solution Center completely. There are workarounds, see http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01796736&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&os=4062&product=1138342 for more information (that is the 32-bit Win7 related page).
It's certainly possible that it is a bad cable.Usually the scanner is the first part of the unit to have if there is a bad cable. So a quick test is to see if you can scan (depending on your OS, you may need to launch the scan from the computer not the scan button). Get a new one (USB male/male Type A/B ends) and check if that solves the problem.
I hope this helps.
