Ink system failure

I have an HP Photosmart 8250 and I recently had to change the yellow ink cartridge. Well, ever since then, I get the message "Ink System Failure, refer to printer documentation". ERROR 0xc18a0001. Then it tells me to turn the printer off and on .. but it still doesn't work.

I have a Photosmart C6280 that got the error 0xC18a0001 with "Ink System Failure" and nothing I tried would fix it. Called HP Support and they said there were lots of things that could cause this. Checked to make sure I had HP cartridges first, which they were (from Walmart). Problem was escalated to a senior tech on phone. The secret sequence on this printer was press both Print photo and RedEye buttons then RedEye then PrintPhoto then RedEye which would get you into the Support screen. From there right arrow to system config the ok then hardware error then ok then clear okay. Power off and it reset the error condition. If you are under warranty then call HP support it is worth it. If not, then navagate the support screen carefully. Hope this helps the next guy. cheers...cgb

To Glenb22 - I tried everything to fix my C6280 with same "ink system failure" error. Followed your instructions which worked! Thank you so much for taking the time to post this solution. You saved me time and money as I was on the point of taking it to an HP centre. Cheers Jane

Your post is 4 years old, but it's still helpful. My HP has been down for over a week with this error message. I went to dozens of sites that gave advice. None of them worked, including HP's. Thank God I stumbled onto your solution. Worked like a charm. My printer is up and running again. Thanks, glenb22

Ok i got it...

Press and Hold the “Print Photos” &”Red Eye Removal” buttons. Release both buttons. Display should say”Enter Special Key Combo”

Press and release in sequence”Red Eye Removal”,”Print Photos”,”Red Eye Removal”

Display should say “Support” and display the FW rev: COxxFN0723BR (or something like that)

Press and release the right arrow button until the display says “System Configuration Menu"

Press and release the “OK” button.
Display should say “Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear”.
Press and release the “OK” Button. Message changes to “Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue”.

Press and release the “CANCEL” button as many times as necessary, so that, either the “Welcome to Photosmart Express” screen appears, or, the “Ink System Failure” screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.

Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.

Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer

Turn the unit on. The printer may display message “USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER” followed by “PRESS OK TO CONTINUE”. Press OK.

the printer will get ready as if it were starting perfectly for a first time, it will say something like: printer preparation occuring - do not interrupt

print a test page:
1) Load letter, A4, or legal unused plain, white paper into the input tray.
2) Make sure that the printer is on and loaded with unused plain, white paper.
3) Press Setup . The Setup menu appears.
4) Press the down arrow button to select Tools , and then press OK .
5) Press the down arrow button to select Self-test Report , and press OK . The self-test report prints.

if this doesn't work, i'd call hp support.

Glenb22 and Surfrdawg, this really worked, thanks so much! I called HP support and they said my printer was too old, they don't make it anymore and I would have to buy a new printer. Thanks for saving me a couple hundred dollars! God bless.

Have you installed a new cartridge or tried the old one that worked to see if the new cartridge you have was bad out of the box?

HP 8250 Photosmart printer that displays "system ink failure"

Try changing the ink cartridges.

If you installed the "HP Support Toolkit" software from the CD-ROM that came with the printer, use this Toolkit to "run a cleaning cycle".
It can print a "test" page, to show you which colours _do_ work, and which do _not_ work.

If all else fails, then find a qualified printer technician.

Ink system failure. How do I reset a hp 8250 printer?

Turn off the machine using the power button, unplug the power cord from the back of the machine, remove the ink cartridges, wait 2 min, plug the power cord back in, press the power button to turn on the printer, wait for the printer to prompt that the ink cartridges are missing, then replace the ink cartridges. If this doesn't clear the error you may need to re-prime the ink cartridges. There is a good explanation of how to do this at http://www.ccl-la.com/blog/index.php/hp-photosmart-ink-system-failure-1/.
