Question about Craftsman 20 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

I replaced the fuel solenoid on my 15.5 hp Kohler lawn tractor engine. Removed carb bowl, changed gasket, now it leaks badly. How do I install bowl gasket so it won't leak?

It is a fuel cutoff solinoid, backfire prevention solinoid. If it fails then you will get no gas into carburetor. If you turn the key from off to run and it clicks then it is working, if it does not click then there is a problem.

no that solenoid is a anti dieseling valve, when you shut off the key, it closes the main jet to shut off fuel immediatly to the engine. sounds like you have an ign problem. im guessing its a twin, you need to get a spark tester... check each cylinder for a strong rythemic purple spark. if not present, replace the coil, of looks good try a set of new plugs. only other thing is a hole in a piston but in that case it wouldnt build enough compression to light out of the carburator. good luck!

Sounds too lean.
Can you cover the air intake with your hand 90% or use the choke a bit and then load the engine to see if it runs better?
If you ever find a carb with manual high and low mixture adjustments that will fit yours......put it on and keep it on.
You can usually get then from older tractors.

blow air back tru fuel line 2 c if it blocked if dat ok check ruber manifold 2 c if theres any craics cud b drawn air 4m there. also try pressureing your tank 2 c if starts if none probs needs rejetted

Can not get gas up to carb.What should I check?


Make sure that the gas Is not tighten all away down. Often times it causes a vacuum to form in the gas won't feed out of the tank properly. Loosen the About a quarter turn and see if that works.

When trying to start fuel spits out of the carburator


Remove carb float bowl. Clean bowl. Get model no. of engine and get new float bowl gasket set at mower repair store. Ensure float drops down freely with float bowl removed. Push up on float to stop fuel flow. If not working properly replace float and meter needle.

Kohler 17.5 HP floods after turned off over night. Gas spits out of muffler when you try to start. It`s hard to start but run fine after engine starts


Probably a leaking float valve. If it has a fuel shut off, use it, and run it out of gas after each use.
If you pull the bowl off the carb, it's the valve attached to the float. cleaning it may help, or replace it.

My Craftsman Lawn Tractor 18 HP Briggs and Stratton runs about 10-15 minutes and then stalls. Will restart after a cool down period, any ideas?


I had the same problem and talked to 3 different techs. The only solution they would come up with is to replace the carb. I didnt believe this was the problem. If you have a fuel solenoid on the bottom of the float bowl remove it and just put in a float bowl plug that threads in. I just taped up the solenoid connector. It runs better than it ever did. I believe the solenoid gets hot and starts shutting off the fuel. I used a plug from a spare set of 1977 yamaha motorcycle carbs I had sitting around.Go figure. Hope this works

Stalling while mowing


There is verfy possibly a fuel restiction in the carb. Many times the particles in the carb float bowl are restricting the fuel flow past the needle valve. I would advise adding some carb cleaner to your gasoline. The other possibility could be a loose carb or carb gasket which would cause a loss of suction through the carb and this would decrease the fuel draw. Soooo if the carb float bowl is the suspect. FIRST you will need to turn off the fuel supply. If no valve is avail, find a bolt or some object that will work to plug the fuel hose when it is removed from the carb you will need to grab a small bowl to catch the fuel when you remove the bolt holding the float bowl. Carefully and I mean gently remove the bowl (sometimes the bowl is slightly sticking and needs a slight bump)and see that the operation of the float moves up and down with no restriction of movement. See if there is any dirt in the bowl. wipe the bowl inside to remove dirt. Carefully reassemble. MAKE SURE no fuel is leaking or spills are in the area. Fire on the outside of the engine is not the prefered method!!!.

My craftsman mower with a 26 hp kohler dies when choke is in


carb dirty, jets partially plugged, float sticking. Not so uncommon problem and is caused by the fuel left in the carb over the winter gumming up (going bad). You can attempt to clean this on your own if you are somewhat mechanically inclined. Search small engine repair and it will give you a generic breakdown of the parts in a small engine carb. If not the, to have someone overhaul a small engine carb will run you about $120 including parts (at least around VA).

Have you checked for a bad head gasket?

Check the intake valve springs or the intake valve shafts to be sure they aren't stuck open. Another cause could be excessive carbon build up on the intake valve causing them to not seal.

If you've gone this far, you could try a compression leak down test. If you still have the push rods out, you can use or get an adapter that will allow you to pressurize the cylinder(s) with air by removing the spark plug. Apply 70-80 psi air directly to the cylinder (the cylinder may go to BDC (bottom dead center) but if you don't have any push rods, the valves can't open.

Listen carefully - if you hear air leaking out of the carb, it's a bad intake valve. If you hear air from the exhaust, it's an exhaust valve. If you hear air from the crankcase breather, it's piston rings.
