Check to see if you have a picture in picture setting. That will show up as a black box.

I thought checking the pip setting was going to work, because there was no problem.

Sometimes the black box pops up after about five minutes and doesn't go away. Other times, like last night, the tv is on for hours and works fine.

Closed captioning and picture in picture (pip) can also cause this.

You have PC problem nto monitor problem since you can see the mouse.
Try booting in safe mode (hit F8) while booting up then go to system restore and set it back to the date you remember before the problem started.
Did you installed any new software or updates before this problem started?

Black box in front of picture

If it's the box, just press the CCD button on the controller until you see CCD off .(Try this one first since it just started with the box)

If it's the TV,just go into the setup options and turn off the closed caption feature.

Black box in center of screen

The Panasonic call center helped us with this one. Our Closed Captioning had been turned on through the TV settings. This made us have a black box with everything besides our cable. Turning off CC on our TV Main Menu solved the problem for us.
