Glassware is cloudy

Glassware and even the cutlery is cloudy - the cloudiness comes off with vinegar (in the sink after the dishwasher) but something has changed....I'm using good dw soap - although recently had been using liquid soap - there is rinse agent in the dishwasher. I did notice a "salt" compartment in the dishwasher and wonder if I'm supposed to be putting salt in there? I'd appreciate any advise/comments. Thanks

Do you generally have hard water--it sounds like that is what you are dealing with. The salt light is to tell you the water-softener salt bin is empty. Where I live we don't use the salt so the light is just an on-off light, but you may need it to reduce the residue.

Glassware cloudy or filmy

Soak the glasses in vinegar and rub the cloudy film off.

I find there is better luck with glasses, and we wash a lot of them, if you use rinse aid. Higher temperatures might also help, but opinions vary.

CLOUDY GLASSWARE

Cloudy glassware happens when your glasses are etched by the combination of your water and the dishwashing detergent you are using. Once the etching occurs, you can't really do anything about it. If you are not doing so, try using a rinse agent such as Jet-Dry. This will help prevent the etching/cloudiness.
I hope this helps. If so , please come back and rate my suggestion.

It could be low water fill but more than likely a failing watersoftner try some Lemmeshine at walmart. to remove cloudy issues and don't add more soap trying to make up for the cloudiness on glassware it will only make things worse.

Our Maytag MDB9100AWB is 5 years old. Have had repairman out several times. Problem is a light cloudy scum on everything. He has replaced several items, has had us clean parts and fixtures, etc and even...

There are three typical causes of chronic cloudiness on glassware/dishes.
  1. The incoming water may be too hot. Make sure the water is at or below 140 degrees F.
  2. Test to see if cloudiness is removable by hand cleaning or soaking for 5 minutes in white vinegar. If it is removable, it's due to hard water. Use a good quality detergent, and match the amount of detergent used to the water hardness and use a rinse aid. (Some low quality detergents clean poorly and leave a film.)
  3. Glassware may be etched, due to too much detergent, too high water temperature, or pre-washing. Etching is not reversible, so it's important to correct the problem promptly.
Hopefully these hints will help you to home in on the problem.

If you have hard water, glasses can look spotted and cloudy even after cleaning. Sometimes changing the dishwasher detergent can help. The easiest solution to clearing up glasses that start to look cloudy is to add some vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher before you start a cycle. Simply add 1 cup of white vinegar and it will clear up your glasses very well.
You should see marked improvement after the first time you do this. If they are not crystal clear then simply repeat the process until all of the cloudiness is gone. In fact I recommend to using a little vinegar in each cycle to maintain the clarity of the glass.

Note: you can pre-test this by rubbing some vinegar on an individual glass with a cloth. If you cannot remove the cloudiness by soaking it and rubbing vinegar on it then it is possible that the glass is etched due to harsh or cheap dishwasher detergent and vinegar will not solve the problem.

Suddenly my asko dishwasher is not cleaning my dishes effectivelyl-- there are cloudy smears all over my glass ware & cutlery-- I use a rinsing agent, but it makes it all worse.

soak the cloudy glass ware in white vinegar for at least 5 minutes. If you can remove it, it could be hard water. You need to adjust your detergent amount. Have you changed detergents ? If so use a high quality brand.
If vinegar doesn't remove the smears, it is probably etching that is caused by hard water, too hot water or prerinsing

Dishwashing detergent will etch fine glassware. Don't wash them in the dishwasher.

Glassware is cloudy even with use of rinse aid.

Your dishwasher may need to be cleaned. To clean it pour in two cups of vinegar and run your hottest, longest cycle

Also, always run the water in the sink until it is hot before turning on the dishwasher. This way you will always be cleaning the dishes with hot water.
