Question about Dometic Rooftop RV Air Conditioner

1 Answer

Bought a used travel trailer, previous owner says the air conditioner works but you have to spin the shaft on the motor as someone inside turns the unit on. This entails someone going to the roof taking of the cover. Are there any fixes for this problem, besides buying a new rooftop unit?

Sounds like the capacitor for the fan motor is shot. Shouldn't be to hard to replace although I don't know where it would be located on your unit.

Get a 12 volt tester (looks like an ice pick, but has a bulb in it) and someone to help you.Attach the ground wire of the tester (it only has one wire).Have your helper do the following, one at a time, while you touch the broken wires on the vehicle. Turn the lights on, step on the brakes, activate your signal flashers, reverse. When the tester illuminates from each wire, match that particular wire with that particular function. Example; When the brake is pressed, the wire for brakes will come on. Don't leave your headlights on for long (kill your battery). Remember to turn your ignition on while checking for flashers and reverse Good luck!

Fan not working when turned on

Hi,
The motor that runs the fnas is not working... Take the cover off and manually with you hands work some WD-40 into the motor bearings... they are at each end of the motor at the shaft...then work some light motor oil into the bearings...once the shaft is spinning freely again it should work...

The rooftop a/c comes on, but the fan does not blow air. On a 2004 starcraft popup trailer

Shut the power off to the unit, spin the fan blade to see if it spins freely. If it doesn't spin freely, (there appears to be a little drag when you spin it),the bearings are bad, if it does spin freely, then try moving the motor shaft from side to side if there’s any play in the shaft side to side then the bearings are worn and motor needs replaced. Then, check the capacitor, if it’s bulging even slightly, the capacitor is bad and needs replaced. Most of the time people replace the capacitor if motor seems ok. If capacitor is ok, turn power on to see if the motor is getting the proper voltage, if it is and not trying to run, then the windings are probably open, the motor's bad and needs replaced.

I just bought a 99 jeep grand cherokee. The air

see if the air duct piping is still connected to the blower housing or the fan blade might have come loose from the motor and the shaft is just spinning inside the fan blade

Unit turns on but it does not blow out any cooled air or any air at all. you can see that the drum inside that usually turns is not turning.

Compressor turns on but fan does not, fan motor is not siezed up rv is only one year old. but ac has not been turned on for 9 months.

Ok, the easiest way to check this is to remove the upper shroud of the AC unit. Have someone inside the coach while you are up there, have them turn the thermostat to ON/High Fan. If the fan does not come one, spin it by hand to see if that gets it going. If that works, let it run for a few minutes, shut down the AC and then lubricate the shaft points on the motor (WD-40 works). Try the unit again, if it does not start on its own this time, then you probably have a bad fan capacitor. It is located in the upper unit inside the small access panel. Two brown wires attached to it.

Hope this helps,

Jeff
