I have a few clarifying questions: Assuming you are one broadband (cable or DSL) are the lights on the dsl/cable modem on? Or blinking in some particular pattern? Are you using a broadband router? If so have you tried bypassing the router to connect directly to the modem? Have you tried unplugging the modem/router from power for a few seconds and then plugging it back in...? Do you have any IP address like 169.x.x.x or no IP at all?

What I am trying to do is locate the USER'S geography with an IP address. Can you help?

Open a COMMAND PROMPT window on your computer (black screen, white text). Type: tracert 111.222.333.444 where 111.222.333.444 is the IP address Press enter. NOTE there's a SPACE between tracert and the IP.
Every server between you and the target will be listed, and there are usually some geographic clues in the server names themselves.

1. IPCONFIG

This command is very useful if you want to see your internet details. Your IP address, your subnet mask, DHCP details and more.

2. SYSTEMINFO

Super useful command that tells you every bit of info about your computer. OS, your processor, your memory, the date your system was installed and lots more.

3. TRACERT

This is how you use this command. type: tracert fixya.com
You can set any IP or web address you want to track. Tracert is very helpful in finding out if there is a choke somewhere between you and some site that's giving you problems. It's basically a simple way to find out the IP address of any webpage you want, along with the latency.

Your question is hard to follow. "got an X as it failed" what is it ?
What are the lease ip addresses from the DHCP server and what is the subnet mask ?
What is the default gateway in the DHCP lease ?
What is the router's internal IP address and subnet mask ?
What is the ip address and subnet mask of the computers used ?
What is the operating system used on computers
can you ping the router from computers ?
can you tracert www.google.com

from the dos prompt for ping (routers ip address)
what route does tracert reveal
does it get to the router
does it find the dns server ?

I can not connect to setup page via default ip address

the easiest way to find the IP address of your access point is to utilize the TRACRT function in command prompt.

Open a command prompt window, (XP-run>cmd vista/windows7-find>cmd

in the command prompt window, type tracert (random address ex. www.google.com)

so in the case of www.google.com, the command would be "tracert www.google.com" (no quotes)

the computer will then send a packet to google.com, but list the paths to it, you should only be really interested in the first couple addresses.

The first IP address will be your computers, if your computer goes through a switch before the router, the second address will be that of the switch, the third will then be the routers IP address

If your computer goes directly into the router, the second anddress on the list will be the router's IP address.

type the given address into your favorite browser and the router config page should be displayed.

If you are not able to determine the problem in the router config page, it may be a different issue, and without more specific refrances to the problem there is not much more advice I can provide. If you do get more information on the problem feel free to reply back and I would be happy to assist.

Wireless and need wep to add lap top access

I take it this is a belkin router. Do you know the router address? To find out you go to the command line and type tracert www.telus.net or anything else.

The first address is the router address. Connect the computer to the router first. You need it connected wired first.

Though, you said WEP. Wireless Encryption Policy has an effectiveness of only about 10 minutes now on the internet. Go to WPA-SK AES or higher (WPA2). Then, what you do is still give it a name and you can set how often it changes (the key).

If you need any specifics, just post a reply.

My ecom ed-802ec does not connect to the internet

If you type ping 127.0.0.1 in your computer through command line, it will tell you if TCP/IP is installed correctly by responding back without a timeout.

Next, type tracert and a website address like google.ca or www.google.ca. The first address is what you need for the router.

Go on to the internet website and go through the setup wizard. If necessary, update the firmware from that website. Go from there.

Just got a belkin g wireless can get internet through it on desk top but not the laptop the laptop says its connected to the belkin but not the internet

First, is the Belkin handing out DHCP addresses? If so, do you know what the address is and is your laptop set to obtain everything automatically for the wireless connection?

on the laptop, can you go to a command prompt and type tracert 74.125.79.83 ? see where the hops stop and if it is the Belkin's IP address, then something in the Belkin is not setup to route outbound from wireless clients.

Hope this helps
