At times it seems to respond in slow motion, but sometimes I try to change the channel and it does not react at all.

Use fresh batteries, clean the front of the sensor with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab or windex I guess. Do the same on tv and dvd player or whatever device you are using. Just keep the IR Sensors clean.
They also have updates you can get for these remotes as well

A software update can get it out of safe mode.
You enter Safe Mode by removing the batteries and reinstalling them
while holding the Power button - my guess is that this started when you
were replacing the batteries. To get out of it, do a firmware update
from your PC. This will install the latest firmware and your
configuration. Safe mode is a bootstrap designed to recover from
firmware corruption issues so about the only thing it knows how to do is
    reload firmware.

However, if the remote fails to communicate with the PC when it is
stuck in Safe Mode, please try the following.

    1. Remove
the batteries from the remote & check for any stuck buttons
especially the Power button that may be causing the remote to stay in
    this state.
    2. If it still will not apply firmware to get out of
safe mode, then still without batteries hold down the #2 button while
plugging into USB, and it should exit Safe Mode, and say something
similar to 'Firmware Upgrade Success'. Even though it says this,
still perform the Firmware upgrade since it was stuck in Safe Mode to
    begin with.

Firmware can be found from your accounts Home
page, at the top Downloads -> Firmware.

Safe Mode is a diagnostic tool in the Remote used for troubleshooting
purposes. If the words "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode Requested" appear on
the remote, complete the following steps:

    1. Ensure the Remote is in "Safe Mode Requested" by taking out the
batteries, and disconnecting the remote from the USB cable.

    2. Hold down the Off button and plug the remote into the USB.

    3. Continue holding down the Off button for another 10 seconds. The
remote should then display the words "Safe Mode Requested".

    4. With the unit in "Safe Mode Requested", re-install the firmware by
clicking Support on your home page.

    5. Click Firmware in the Downloads section and follow the online
    instructions to upgrade the firmware.

    6. Once the firmware upgrade is complete, click Update My Remote.

    7. Insert new batteries into the remote.

Hi,

There could be many things that needs to be checked.Let me explain you in details :-

1. First of all, you need to Make sure that there is nothing wrong with the Battery.Used another set of battery.

2. Take a Cotton and Clean the Connectors. I have seen many times, that due to Dust and Dirt, the Battery Connectors might result in Intermittent Working.

3. Last Option, before you could Opt for a New Remote or get it Repaired ( which is not a wise Option as more often you as the cost of repair is high relatively to the cost of the New Remote ) - You could Dissemble the Remote and Clean the Pads. Clean the Sensor and make sure that there is no Circuitry Fault.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

    Thanks for your response!!

I am Surprised, is this another Question ???

Initially you never mentioned that it is in Safe Mode

Question - At times it seems to respond in slow motion, but sometimes I try to
change the channel and it does not react at all.

It is advisable to mention all Error Messages, and the Problem in Detail.

Have You tried to Update the Firmware?

Let me know,so that i could Proceed.

    Thanks!!

I have put new batteries in twice - does not help

this information should help you. It's also been addressed on logitech site:

Click on the Device's "More Options"

    - Select "Adjust the delays (speed settings)"

    Inter-key Delay: 300ms

    Inter-Device Delay: 300ms

Start by adjusting the Inter-key and Inter-Device delays to 300ms or
less. Then test the remote. If it works at 300ms, keep lowering the
speed in 100ms increments and see if the device still responds. If it
doesn't, increase it back up 100ms. In my experience, I've found that
most devices will respond to 100ms and devices like Tivos will take an
    Inter-key of 0ms.

    Click on the Device's "Troubleshoot"

    - Select "Show me more problems"

    - Select "Device doesn't appear to receive every command correctly."

    - Select "The device responds too much to some commands (for example,
volume up increases the volume too quickly)."

The default number of repeats is 3. Lower the repeat speed and see if
the remote still responds. If it doesn't, increase the number of repeats
until the device still responds. In my experience, most devices will
respond with 2 or more repeats and devices like Tivos will respond with 1
    repeat.

If you need further assistance let me know,
    Thank you,
    Lee

    3. Press System Options.

These are very complex remotes so there are a lot of possibilities to what it could be. Have you updated the firmware at all? Please take a moment to accept/rate my solution as I see you have passed on my assistance.
    Thanks,
    Lee

Well then that would be part of the problem. You listed your problem under an 890 remote. Had i been given the correct model number I may have been able to assist you properly sooner.
    Thank you,
    Lee

taking the remote apart and cleaning the contacts with at least 91% rubbing alcohol will do the trick. Also be careful to not strip the screws. Please accept/rate my solution as you should find this information more then helpful.
    Thank you,
    Lee

Non responsive buttons

You have to open up the remote. The underside of each button has a black disk. Clean each button with a pencil eraser. Then look at the circuit board. Where each of the black discs would make contact (looks like two "E"s facing each other) clean each of those with the eraser. But the remote back together and all the buttons will be responsive.

My Harmony 890 remote has a difficult time inputing numbers

Hi. This problem is caused because the 'repeat' setting on the device that you use to change channels (TV or cable box) is too high.

1. In the software, click 'Troubleshoot' next to the icon for the device that you change channels on.
2. Select '<device> responds to some commands either too many times or only occasionally' and click NEXT.
3. Decrease the setting by one (the default is usually 3).
4. Update your remote and test it.

Controls not working on Philips 28" TV

We had this problem with a 28PW6515. The control would work for 30 seconds after switching on, then nothing. It was diagnosed as the "glue chip" which handles all the control functions. About £200 to fix it as it's a surface mount chip.
