Question about GE JVM1650 1000 Watts Microwave Oven

3 Answers

GE microwave #JVM1660BB message center playback garbled.

This model microwave has a message button where you can record a 20 second message. Upon playback the message is very distorted and has a loud hum. I think the microphone is on the main PCB. The PCB unit costs $200 and the speaker costs $85.00. Besides replacing these any hints on repair?

Hi -We have a GE spacemaker XL microwave (man. Feb 2000) model# JVM132OWBOO2. I twon;t so anything. The inside light comes on and the board says "F3" but nothing else. We have unplugged it to try to reboot it and nothing. A few days a go we lost power but I think it worked after that so I don;t think that has anything to do with it. Do you ahve any suggestions? We called GE and they said it means some kind of failure and to try to reboot it. Is 8 years a long time for a microwave? I would think not. Thank you in advance.

I would say there is a defective electrolytic capacitor on the smart board. The loud hum is the clue of interest.

We repair these for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 in most cases.

If you might want to utilize our service, we have *critical* safety & disassembly info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

What is the wattage?

Oddly, the owner's manual doesn't say.

You can contact GE customer service here, or if it's working properly, here's a test that will tell you how much output power it has:

MICROWAVE HEATING POWER TEST

The following test will provide a suitably accurate measurement of the output power of any microwave oven. Variations or errors in performing this test will produce uncertain results. If the line voltage (from the electrical outlet) is low, the magnetron output will be correspondingly low.

Equipment needed:

- Microwave safe container with 1000 mL (1 Liter) gradation.

- Fahrenheit or centigrade thermometer

Procedure:

Pour exactly 1000 mL (1 Liter) of cool tap water into the container. Using the thermometer, stir the water, then measure and record the temperature. For accurate results the water should be about 60 degrees F (20 degrees C).

Place the container on the center of the oven cooking shelf (do not leave the thermometer in the container and remove any metal racks), and heat the water (at full power) for 63 seconds. Use the second hand of a watch, not the oven timer.

After the heating time is completed, immediately remove the container, stir the water, re-measure and record the temperature of the heated water.

Subtract the starting water temperature (step 2) from the ending water temperature (step 3) to obtain the temperature rise.

To determine the output power in watts, multiply the total temperature rise by a factor of 38.75 if you're using a Fahrenheit thermometer or by 70 if you're using a centigrade thermometer.

GE JVM1660BB SERIAL # VV951264S I NEED TO REPLACE

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the screws you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) here that demonstrates how it's done.

You can find handy exploded views and order parts by model number here.

Microwave is arcing on the antenna blade.

Arcing is often the result of the cover over the magnatron (The thing that produces the microwaves) being aged, burned or damaged. If you look inside the oven, you will see a cover (usually square or round and around 3-5 inches across depending on the machine)made from a flakey silver plastic/fibre material. If this is burned or has a hole, it needs replacing and this will probably cure your problem.

GE JVM1650 Microwave Suddenly Stops

Your magnetron tube is leaking RF energy inside and zapping the main board. It is NOT dangerous as any leakage will be contained inside the unit. You will need a new mag tube and it is covered by a 5 or 10 year parts warranty. Call GE Factory Service at 1-800-432-2737or schedule online at www.geappliances.com

G E microwave 1650ch01

This is a due to a defective or loose magnetron causing electrical interference and disruption in the control circuit board.

If yours was recently replaced, it may have loose mounting nuts or bolts or the wire mesh RF gasket was not installed or got pinched.

It may also need a new high-voltage diode and stirrer, and the cavity may be affected.

GE had a campaign (but not a recall, mind you!) covering several models.

Details are in their bulletin at http://207.234.249.73/mwd/ge_mw_mag_kit_bulletin.pdf

The parts kit (that GE used to pay for) is part # WB27X10489 and is shown in the photo below.

GE Microwave DEMO MODE

I just bought a condo with a GE Spacemaker Mod# JVM1860SD
that was stuck in demo mode. (This mod# has been replaced by the JVM1870*** series)

I called GE twice in two days, and finally got someone who had the solution (and it worked):

  1. Unplug the unit for at least 30 seconds
  2. Plug the unit back in DO NOT SET THE CLOCK
  3. While the unit is still "booting up" and the display screen is lit with gibberish, HOLD THE POWER LEVEL AND THE ZERO BUTTON for at least 5 seconds.
  4. After 5 seconds, the screen will display "demo mode off"
It messed me up at first because the power level and zero pads don't beep when the unit is booting up... but it worked.
- Again, this is for the GE Spacemaker 1860-1870 series models only - The women who gave me instructions said she had different demo mode unlock methods for the 1400, 3670, 2070 etc... so call GE if you have a different model.
P.S. my model looks like this - the keypad setup is key http://products.geappliances.com/ApplProducts/Dispatcher?REQUEST=SPECPAGE&SKU=JVM1870SK&SITEID=GEA
