SOURCE: I have a Bolens BL410 cultivator that stops running

Hi and welcome to Fixya. The symptoms your describing are typical of what happens when the engine experiences fuel starvation.

It can be caused by a clogged fuel filter screen located at inside the attachment point of the fuel line manifold on the carb. Turn off the fuel and remove the mounting bolt for the fuel mainfold. Very carefully remove the plastic screen inside the manifold and clean off the debris that has built up on the screen.
If the screen was visibly clogged you probably have solved your problem. Just make sure you re-install the screen when re-connecting the fuel line manifold.

If the screen was not clogged then check your fuel lines for cracks. Air being introduced into the system will cause the same symptoms you describe.

If the problem persists then there is the possiblility that the needle and seat are partially blocked inside the carb itself on the bottom of the carb body after you remove the bowl. (Usually not the problem) However the bolt that holds the bowl on has 1 or 2 holes in it that can also clog and they must be clear.

And finally there is a BRASS jet that unscrews with a screwdriver in the bottom of the long draft tube (way below the throttle slider / needle) that gets clogged. Unscrew the brass jet and force air from the threaded end to clear the orifice.

By this time you probably figured out the float comes off with the bowl. note which side is UP! Also DO NOT adjust the float level it is preset. u|Unless you bent the float control arms it does not need adjusting.

Turn on the fuel... and start the unit after re-assy and it should run just fine. You should be tilling real soon!

Why doesn't it start?

Try spraying carb cleaner inside the carburetor. Left over gas will clog the tiny ports inside the carburetor. Next time either add stabilizer in your gas tank or run it dry until next season. Good luck!

My kolher engine on my rototiller will not start.I can put a little bit of gas where the spark plug goes and it will start for a few seconds but won't keep running.is it major?

No what the problem may be is the gas tank filter may be stopped up or the carburetor has varnished gasoline in it? In the future use an additive called stabil can be found at most auto parts stores or Walmart has it in automotive around the gasoline additives! It gasoline from varnishing and becoming gel like in the winter when you store your mowers weedeaters and tillers! Try getting gasoline to be pulled up by making sure gas flows from fuel lines first! If you don't have a primer button then you more than likely have a choke on the carb? Close the choke you can use ether sparingly to ease in pulling the rope frequently or a rag soaked with a little gas will allow vapors to get sucked in the carb assisting the engine to start

How do i start. my mantis tiller after it has sat all winter?I've pumped and pushed and its not starting....why isn't it chick-user friendly?

If you are having problems starting your tiller you shouldcheck 3 things, air, fuel and spark.

Fuel: check to make sure you are full of good quality fuel, try to start theengine several times then take out the spark plug and it should look wet. If its not wet then you aren't getting fuel into the engine.
Air: remove and clean the air filter with clean gasoline if its made offoam. If its made of paper then you should buy a new one from a localauto parts or hardware store.
Spark: disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug and hold thewire close to the engine block. Try to start the engine and watch for aspark to jump between the end of the wire and the engine block. If itdoesn't then either the wire is bad or the ignition coil is bad.

My KTM started before winter, so I changed the spark plugs and put a new sprocket on it, and new gas. but it will not start. What could it be, or what are some troubleshooting tips?

I am assuming you didn't drain your carb prior to winterizing. So just because you put new gas in doesn't mean that you couldn't have obstructions in the carb from sitting through the winter. Remember in order to start you need 3 things:
1) Compression
2) Spark
3) Fuel

More than likely your compression is good.
Double check that you have spark.
Then confirm your carb is clean.

Old (1981)Troy Prof. 8hp tiller runs 30 sec. and stops.

Clean the carb and if this machine was kept outside all winter make sure no water in tank. I realize you stated that you removed old gas but how it was removed is the key. Try the carb thing first though.

I can't get it to start, it just sputters for about 10 seconds and cuts out.

If your tiller sat all winter it will need a little work. Drain all of the old fuel out of the tank, install a new spark plug and install a new air filter. Put new fuel in the tank [if you still have old fuel in your portable gas tank dump it into your car or truck so you start fresh for all of your small gas engines.

Now crank it over and it may start. If it doesn't start you need carbeurator cleaner. But an aerosol can of carb cleaner and put two squirts in the air intake [remove the new air filter and leave it off while you get the engine running]. Pull your cord, turninng the engine over and possibly starting it. If it starts, great. If not, let it sit for half hour while that carb. cleaner dissolves some of the gum built up in your carberator over the winter. Two more squirts of carb cleaner and try to start it again.
Generally it will start by now. If it doesn't start your carbeurator must be really dirty. You will have to remove it, and soak it in carb. cleaner for about three hours to clean it out.

Mantis 2-stroke tiller won't start

This could be one of several problems...
• Last year's fuel. Get some fresh gas.
• Every 2-stroke needs a new spark plug each year... you know what that means.
• Clogged carb jets due to storing the tiller over the winter with fuel in the system. Never, ever do that. Now you'll need to pull the carb apart and clean it. Most of the orifices are so tiny you can't see them. Good luck.
• Engine is so old the crankshaft seals have hardened with age. This is one reason no 2-stroke lasts longer than about 8 years. If the seals are shot, then it will cost more to fix than a new one costs. Time to toss it.
