Question about Canon PIXMA MX310 All-In-One Printer
Go into printer properties.
In there will be a option to change from "color" to "grey scale"
Hard to really tell you where in the printer settings this will be due to every manufacture having it's own place for it.

But you still need to insert both black & color cartridges together inside the machine. Once the machine showing "ink out" message, you are not able to operate it normally.
