Does that apply to all discs?

If only some discs, then there is a chance that your drive just can't read those discs.

    Thanks for the response.
Ok, lets start with the basics.
When I click on "My Computer", both my Samsung and Sony drives are acknowledged. Both are factory installed.
When I open the slides and insert a disk (closing the slide) the drive flashes a small light.
    Now for the trouble:
When I click on either drive from "My Computer", a small window is displayed: "Insert Disk into drive E" if it is the DVD driver or "Insert Disk into drive F" if it is the CD/RW drive.
One disk is a Linksys installation that is factory written, the other contains Word files that I want to transfer to my hard drive.
I am running Windows XP on a Compac computer.
    Thanks

    Thanks for your time.
But... I guess you did not read my most recent message.
The drives will not acknowledge that there is a disk inserted at all. Either drive: CD/RW or DVD.
I have used four different factory program disks and one self written disk containing Word files.

So testing other disks is not usable.
And I am not trying to burn a CD, I just want the drives to read them.
Your response did not help. But again thank you for your time.

Hi, two things you can try.
1 Use a different burning program, there are many free ones on the web, I use Ashampoo Burning Studio 6 Free .If that does not work with your disks 2 Try a different brand of disk. Hope this helps you.

Hi,as you say neither of your drives are reading your disks, the only other suggestion I can think of is try cleaning your drives. One way is to use Isopropanol which you can obtain from your chemist.

My cd drive shows empty even with disc inserted

If the disks you insert DO work on some other computer,
then it's time to spend $40 and buy a new CD/DVD-writer,
to replace the "dead" unit.

The "working properly" part is ONLY an indication that the hardware has been detected, and the correct software device-drivers have been loaded; it makes no guarantee that the unit will work.
Compare it to having a car -- it looks like a car, but if won't start, it still is a car, although it cannot be used as a car.

Device- SONY CD-RW CRX320EE It is detected by the OS(Xp-64bit). Device Status- working properly. Disks(any type) when inserted not detected . More over i can access the drive when i double click it even...

make sure it is not a DVD disk you are trying to insert into your Drive because your Drive is a CD-RW will not read DVD nor burn onto it.

Your disk may be damaged or corrupt and the drive cannot read it.
your drive may need a firmware update from Sony.
use this link below to access Sony's website to download drivers.
