Question about Toshiba 50H81 50" Rear Projection Television

3 Answers

Green Convergence I have a toshiba 50H81, 2001 model. My problem I am having is with the vertical green line in the touch focus, the line is pretty warped and the horizontal is just fine, and the other colors are fine vertically and horizontally. How do I determine which board to pull out to check to repair or replace. I have minimal back ground in electronics, and I know my limitations. If it starts getting to technical I will pay a tech to fix it, but I would like to give it a try first.

Mrniceguy, thanks for your response. If you could walk me thru this procedure as I post questions I would really appreciate it. I am guessing the 2 large heatsinks are the ones in the center of the picture I am posting marked with a black X, and they are on the right board (green) on the left side of it. And the IC's are the black pieces screwed to the back side of them. I just want to be sure I am disassembling the right part. Thanks.

Thanks mrniceguy, I got the board out with not to much problem, and I ordered the CI's and some tools to complete the project, I'll be intouch when they arrive in 2-5 days they tell me.I'm a little nervous on how close the CI solder points are to each other, I will need a magnifier, my eyes aren't what they used to be. :)

  • Scubaguy Apr 10, 2008

Hey mrniceguy, I recieved my order last night of parts and tools, and today I have desoldered the heatsinks while leaving the IC's in place, then replaced the IC’s and added new heat grease. I checked for bad resistors, they look good, nothing else on the board looks bad. The heat sink and IC combo are soldered back in place, except I will finish the IC soldering to the board part tomorrow and then I'll let you know if it was a success or a reeducation in basic soldering skills.

Hi mrniceguy, well no luck today. I got the board installed and all the plugs connected and I just get a blank screen, even though the power light comes on, thats the only thing that does. I could probably pull it back out and look for more stuff to fix but like I said before I know my limits and I have reached it. Thanks for your help.

WOOOOHOOOO !! Thanks guest for the recomendation to recheck the conections, there was a loose one. If I can squeeze 1-2 more years out of this television, I'll be real happy, and thanks to mrniceguy for his expertise in diagnostics. Scubaguy has left the building!!

Make sure that you check all cables to ensure they are in the rigth connectors and see if you might have forgotten one and something is disconnected.

If you are looking at the tv from the back you will see 2 large heat sinks on the left board(signal board) these are the convergence output ICs one of those is bad and most likely you have at least one bad resistor near the faulty IC. the part numbers on the ICs will be STK392-110 i suggest replacing both and any bad resistors and see what you get also check for any bad solder joints there are 2 large blue coils that you can see from the top side check there joints for bad solder as well as any other components on the same line. otherwise call your tech

yes those are it. make sure that you mark any cables with a sharpie after you take them off of the board so you know where they go back. also be very careful with that board on the right it is double sided and if you crack it then you are pretty much out of luck. i usually de solder the AMPS and the heat sinks together and remove them as one.

Absence of Vertical scan output signal. You have to check its vertical scan output section circuit to detect and rectify this fault.
Check and replace damaged component/s at its horizontal scan output section circuit. Check the LOT (Line Output Transformer) too for damage. Replace the horizontal scan output transistor. Check the input voltage to LOT. If the voltage is absent check the feeder resistor; if any. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts.

My Toshiba remote control se-r0077 sometimes works to control the DVD player and other times it doesn't. I've tried new batteries and the problem still persist s

One of the best ways to check if an infra-red remote controller is working properly is to look at it using a camera. (a webcam or phone camera will work) The camera will see the infra red radiation as visible light. If the LED lights up (on camera) consistently when buttons are pressed, then it may not be the remote at fault, but rather the receiver in the DVD player. Most of the time though, it IS the remote control at fault, and these are usually easy to get working again.

Couple of things to check are:

1) the battery terminals...
Batteries can leak and corrode the terminals in the battery compartments. Signs of this include rust, green coloured contacts, or a crystalline deposit. If you see any of this then clean the contacts using metal cleaner or some methylated spirit and cue-tips.

2) Broken wires connecting battery terminals to the circuit board...
The soldering in some remotes can be rather poor, and wires can sometimes come loose, especially if a remote has been dropped or bashed about a bit. Unscrew the remote and check everything is connected properly

3) Dirt under the buttons...
This can prevent a button from making contact with the circuit board properly. Unscrew the controller and separate the rubber button pads from the circuit board check for dirt both underneath the pads AND on the metal contacts on the circuit board. Clean as required with methylated spirit and cue-tips and then reassemble.

Hope that helps!

The color on my TV is all pink. I have tried a hard reset but it didn't help.

Your TV has lost a GREEN color from a basic color palette (Red-Green-Blue). It is often caused by:
- damaged LCD cable (which connects the display with a signal board inside the TV),
- damaged video signal cable (ex. SCART, HDMI, VGA),
- damaged video processor (on the signal board).
I can't give you a more accurate answer, because I don't know what is your TV mark and model and, in what situations you have the problem.
