Question about Microsoft LifeCam VX-1000 Webcam

2 Answers

Why has my microsoft Life Cam VX7000 has stopped working. It has been working well but at my new Skype session last evening it just stopped. The blue light is on the web cam, I have disinstalled and reinstalled the software, rebooted and changed the USB port. According to Skype it is installed and working correctly but it is not showing the video picture on my, or anyone else's computer. Thankyou

I have followed the other expert's instuctions but still have the problem. He advised that it may be the camera but the blue light comes on when I try to take a video snapshot but nothing happens. Camera is only two weeks old.
    Thankyou

Can your partner see you while chatting?

  • soosywhit May 12, 2010

No, partner cannot see me. If the webcam was broken, surely the blue light would not come on?

  • Johny May 12, 2010

go to "My Computer", and see a section for "Imaging Devices" double click it and let me know what happens?

  • soosywhit May 12, 2010

The only other thing I have done is to start using Windows Live Messenger, would this have any effect? I think I did this around the time the camera stopped working.

    Thankyou soosywhit

  • Johny May 12, 2010

Yes that can be the problem please close it and check and then restart Skype if the problem persist then follow the steps below

    • Enlarge your Skype window.

    • To select your video device (if using Windows), in Skype click Tools
      > Options > General > Video Settings
      and click Webcam
      Settings
to check that your webcam is functioning properly.
You can also set video privacy settings in this window.

    • Make sure that no other program is using your webcam. Many
manufacturers add their own applications for camera operations, so
please close all programs that may steal the video feed.

    During a call:

    • Right-click on the video window and make sure that Hide
      myself
      is unchecked.

Hi,

The way you describe it it appears to be a hardware fault but to make sure please try these steps out:

Make sure your user is one of Administrator's group.

Unplug all of your USB devices. (Important)

  1. Reboot your computer and start pressing F8 key until you see the Advanced Start-up menu. If Windows loads then you have failed. Repeat.
  2. Once you reach the Advanced Start-up menu choose Safe Mode.
  3. Go to the Start Menu and click Control Panel.
  4. Double click System.
  5. Click the Hardware tab.
  6. Click the Device Manager Button.
  7. Scroll down in the list and expand "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".
  8. Right click each USB Root Hub and select Un-install. Why has my microsoft Life Cam VX7000 has stopped - f670a3c.jpg
  9. Restart your PC.
When your computer is booted up and back to normal, plug in each USB device that was removed one by one, waiting for the system to say "Your new hardware has been installed and is ready to use."

If the webcam still is unresponsive then its better to replace it. Please understand that webcams can be repaired but the cost is far greater than buying a new one. Thanks.

OK.You did not mention that the camera is relatively new. In this case it will be replaced in warranty. Please contact the dealer the sooner the better and please do not attempt to disassemble it in any way as doing so will void the warranty. Thanks.

The flash to which you are referring to as 'blue light' is a collection of LEDs that illuminate the scene so that the camera captures a better image. The image capturing is done by a separate mechanism consisting of a CMOS sensor. If the sensor is faulty the LEDs will still illuminate but no image will be captured. Hope this satisfies your curiosity.

Trying to use web cam on sype but says it's being used by another application. how do I find out which program is using my cam and how do I stop or unblock it

Did you install the software that came with Microsoft?
If you did that software might be running and preventing Skype from using the webcam.
Generally web cam software will add an icon on the task bar in the bottom right corner of the monitor. Check for the life cam software to see if it's running and close it if is.

When using Skype, I get an error message and people hear me but

Hi, I checked and found that the Oker web cam was rated one of the best for Skype. If you read Microsoft's review of your cam it shows that it's really made for the Windows Live System. Check out this link on the Oker.
http://www.mathaba.net/shop/skype-webcam1.shtml
7a9bc13.gif If you can do it, buy a Oker and test it out to see if the problem is with your cam and not the pc. If it turns out the same as your MS cam then we can look into your setup on your PC. but you have stated that your cam works find with other software. Let me know how it went.

In the end I just rang the MS helpdesk. They suggested that I looked up the the device on "my PC". I did - found it, double clicked on the device... and it sprang into life... I opened Skype, who was now also able to see the device... and it works.
Hope others may be able to use this as well?

Normal 0 Did you install the software with the camera connected to the computer? Disconnect the camera from the USB port and reinstall the software. When the program asks you to connect the camera, do so, and it should work. Hope this is of some help. Bud

Normal 0 Start Skype ThenGo to "TOOLS", click on "OPTIONS," Then go to "Audio Settings" and click on it. Make sure both the Microphone and Speaker's are correctly chosen. Then "make a free test call." Wait till the voice tells you to record. Then when finished talking wait for the test persons voice to insure your audio transmission is working. Then go back to options and test your video settings. Click on Video Settings and proceed to set up you video camera. Also, you can visit this site for additional information to setup video.
