If your receiver has another digital audio input available to connect to, such as a coaxial or optical input, you can use either of those for the PS3. Another option is to use one of the composite audio inputs, but however, your surround mode for that type of input will not be Dolby Digital, DTS or any of the high definition surround sound formats. You will instead be able to get one of the Dolby ProLogic formats, or one of the various surround modes that are proprietary to the receiver model by it's digital signal processor...depending on which you choose.

Connect ps3 just sound to surround sound

PS3 has an "optical out" port. Use an optical coaxial cable (something like this one XO Digital Optical Cable 2m 2 Metre Premium Install Series suitable for... ) to connect this to an optical in port on your surround sound receiver/amplifier.

Go into the sound settings on the PS3 and set it to output dolby digital 5.1 from the optical connection.

Switch your surround amplifier to the appropriate source.

If your surround sound receiver unit has rca audio inputs(red/white), you can hook up any brand of DVD player that has rca outputs. You would hook the yellow output from DVD player to yellow input on TV. Hook red/white output from DVD player to red/white input on surround receiver. Hope this helps.

I have no sound through my surround sound when playing ps3

The optical audio out from the TV only works for the TV's tuner, probably. Hook-up optical from Cable/SAT and from PS3 boxes to DVD/Receiver.

PS3 surround sound

You will need the optical cable. My receiver only passes video through the hdmi. So I hooked up the HDMI cable to the tv, and the optical cable to the receiver. Once that is done you have to go to the audio settings for the PS3 and chose audio through the optical.

Hooking up a PS3 to my surround sound

you have to go to the set up menu and let the receiver know that you are inputting dvd audio to the digital in. (assigning). that way, when you switch the receiver to dvd, it will look for audio from the digital input. your receiver manual will guide you through that set-up.
if that does not work, the fiber optic cable could be bad. this is more common than people would expect.
another option is to just rca cables to the receiver from the ps3. there is an adapter that lets you do that.
good luck
