Question about Garmin GPSMAP 76CS GPS Receiver

1 Answer

GPS Map 76CSX unit will not locate satellites

Screen shows only a circle with N, S, E, W and an orbiting red dot.
No bars for satellite signal strength are present

All other screens are operable, but without satellite reception, the GPS is worthless.

Is there an easy fix or do I have to send it back to the factory for repair. ?

My gps freezes when on speedo

Okay. I have to explain what happens when you use the speedometer option. While it is off, the GPS use using less cycles per minute to get the location from the satellites and sometime from ground beacons. When in speedo mode, it now needs more processor, memory, graphics speed and the power needed for the receiver. Now the unit is running about twice the cycles per minute to provide an accurate location to judge your speed.
How to work around this.
Best answer: Dont use this option! Its simple and you dont have to burn your noodle worrying about it.
2. If you must use it, then go into your display and map options and turn the map details and quality down. This will free up memory and CPU speed.
3. Turn tracking off. This will free up memory and CPU speed.
4. Use Garmin's mapping program to only load necessary map locations. This will free up memory space.
5. Be sure you are updated to the latest map data and firmware.
6. This can also be caused by the location of the GPS in the vehicle. On the main screen of most Garmin's, you press and hold on the corner near the icon showing the GPS signal. It will go to a more detailed screen of the satellites and signal strength. Stay in one place in an open area like a parking lot. Let the GPS locate itself first. Then relocate it where you can easily see it and you see 40% of signal or more from 4 or more satellites.
Have fun with what I gave you and good luck. VicFixx

Hi, can't find any reference on my tom tom go 910 to an altimeter function but it is supposed to have one

tap the satellite tab on the main screen (where the satellite bars are) then tap the right hand side where the satellite bars are on that next screen..

thats where mine is located, but it might be different on yours if you moved the location of the satellite bar on the main map page (there is a couple of different options to choose from in the options tab, as to where to locate the satellite bar)

Show map does not show current location

im going to assume the satellites are not locked on.

look up at the top right corner of the map screen, and there should be atleast 4 green bars..if not, the satellites have not locked on to your position yet and wil show the last location you were at when i lost the satellites.

take the unit out side in clear view of the open sky and turn it on, then hold the power button for ten seconds. after it turns off, hold the power button till it starts. let it sit outside for up to 30 minutes to aquire the satellites.

if that fails, go HERE and download and install the latest update. just follow the install direction and it should fix it.

My Tom Tom 530 switches on ok but screen shows no signal, when outside. I have pressed the reset button problem still persists. Can you help! Thanks.

Tap the map screen in the lower right hand side where the bars are then tap the screen on the upper right hand side where the battery is. This will bring you to the satellite screen. Leave it alone for about a minute if you don't see any grey bars showing on the bottom of the screen your unit has a problem. If you do see grey bars at the bottom leave it alone and let it do it's thing. Sometimes for the first time after not using it for awhile it may take up to a 1/2 hour for it to locate the satellite's

MY TOMTOM ONE IS WAITING FOR A VALID GPS SIGNAL I HAVE ALREDY STARTED TWICES

Turn on your tt and let it bootup. After it has booted up go to the map screen. On the bottom right where the bars are for satellite reception. Tap the bars this will take you to the screen telling you the device code etc. On the upper far right where the battery icon is tap the screen again. This will take you to a screen showing the satellites. If you see grey bars on the graph just wait awhile. Sometimes when your tt has not been turned on for awhile or you have turned it on after traveling a few miles it may take up to 30 minutes to get a lock.
Hope this helps

No gps device

Hi,

Sometimes it can take a TomTom many minutes to obtain satellites. To give it a chance and to test it make sure you have a clear 180 degree view to the south ( that's if you are in the northern hemisphere ) . Its to the north if you are in the southern hemisphere.
So, put the TomTom with it's back facing the equator ( all the GPS satellites are above the equator in an arc ) it's almost straight up in fact but towards the equator.
If you switch on , let it boot up , then tap the screen near the bottom right where you see a bar graph . ( see photo's and finger indicates where to tap position )
The screen will change to another screen and again you should have the bar graph on right hand side with a battery symbol either below or above. once again tap the bar graph and a larger STATUS screen should appear. You should be able to see the TomTom scanning for satellites . Any it receives will be GREY but grey ones are not yet locked on. If any of the bars on the TomTom get a fix or lock on they will turn BLUE . Only when the TomTom has 3 or more BLUE satellites can it present a fix on your location. If none of the bars on the graph ever turn BLUE then you have a faulty TomTom or possibly corrupted data on the SD card. If you get ANY of the bars turn BLUE then it's likely your TomTom is working OK but is just having difficulty locking onto any satellites. You might have to wait a while or move location.
Once the TomTom gets a fix , even if you turn it off then on again it will remember what satellites it was locked onto before so it should not need to scan again and should find the satellites real quick or at least quicker. See photographs below for the 3 stages to go through to check status.
( NOTE : The photograph shows a TomTom ONE v2 but almost all models of TomTom show similar screens ) See last photo where one of the bars is GREY , this shows it's receiving that satellite but it's not strong enough to get a fix from it. The last bar shows the TomTom knows there is a satellite there but currently has no signal from it. The BLUE bars show good reception and fixes on those satellites.
I do hope this helps solve your problem but if not then please revisit this forum and post any questions again and i'll see if I can help.
