There is no AMD Athlon that runs natively at 2.5 GHz. They were badged on comparative rating: a 2500+ will run at 1833 MHz or 1867 MHz, depending on the version.

Amd athlon xp 2400+ problems witha epox ep-8kra2+ motherboard?

It sounds to me like the processor that you bought is not fully supported in the current bios in your mobo. I would check the epox website for newer bios. Be careful flashing the bios, if you misstep in the flash, you may end up with a brick. If you are successful, you should be able to run the processor at the speeds you expected, though within the limits of the hardware on the mobo. Also look at the spec's for the mobo on the site to see if your processor is listed as being supported.

Can I upgrade my 1Ghz processor to a faster 2 or 3Ghz? I have an EliteGroup 741GX-M, socket 462 desktop with an AMD sempron

yes, it is possible, but the Front side bus will limit the functionality so much that it wouldn't be worth it.

CPU (processor) speed dropped to 1.09GHZ

Go back into the Bios and change the settings back. If this does not correct the issue you may have another issue. If this is a laptop you can reset the bios by locating the Bios reset switch, usually appears as a pin hole on the bottom of the computer, if this is a desktop then you need to use the Bios Reset jumper on the motherboard. It sounds as thought Windows is not reading the CPU type and speed correctly so you need to undo the change you made to get it back up to speed.
