Did you check the numlock button ?
Laptops suffer from this button since it changes the keys 7890uiopjkl:m>? to correspond to the regular keypad on regular desktop's keyboard.
Turning the numlock off will bring the keyboard to it's regular state.
Another scenario may be if you have changed your keyboard's language at the windows control panel.

A little more information on operating system and language would have been helpful. Since I don't have all the info I'll make some assumptions and hope these help.
Assumption no.1. Your operating system is some MS Windows version. (I'll try Win XP).
Assumption no.2. Based on you getting a "less than sign" instead of semi-colon I guess you are using an English version of the operating system.
