Question about Dishwashers

1 Answer

Good morning! My Whirlpool dishwasher (I'm at work so don't know the precise number) leaves about an inch of water at the bottom after washing. I called a Whirlpool representative soon after my purchase (post Ike devastation of previous dishwasher that drained fully) and was told that this was rather normal for Whirlppol. I live on Galveston Island in Texas, and adding any more sources of water and humiditiy to my household seems counterproductive. Is there anything that I can do to cause the dishwasher to drain? Is the lack of total drainage truly a typical situation?

So about how much water is typically "normal"
to see in the dishwasher after a complete cycle has run?

  • speloqui May 11, 2010

Can you please be a bit more specific about the rather vague description of "some water." Are we talking about 1/4 inch? 1/2 inch? 1 inch?

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. Dishwasher not draining properly or not draining at all issues can arise due to different reasons. Usually, these issues are related to kinked hoses, knocked out disposer unit (if connected with the dishwasher drain hose) & clogged drain pump & filter. Also note that dishwashers do not drain completely after a finished cycle and this is normal. Dishwashers are designed to leave some water in the unit to ensure that the heating element doesn’t overheat. If you suddenly begin to experience a large amount of water being retained in your dishwasher, you have a problem. Some of the most common reasons include that the drain hose isn’t working properly, the drain pump isn’t working correctly, or possibly there is a plumbing problem in your home’s drain lines.

First check whether the drain is not clogged or blocked and the line is not kinked. Check all the hoses for blockages & also clean the air gap. Has the disposer been replaced recently? If so, chances are the knockout is still in place. Simply remove the drain hose from the disposer, and knock out the plug. If the disposer has not been replaced, try removing the drain hose from the disposer and use a wet-dry vacuum (prepared for water, of course) to **** any water (and hopefully anything else) from the drain line. Then reconnect the hose, and test the unit. If you have checked the air gap and the drain hose and can’t locate the problem, then it is an issue with the drain pump of the dishwasher.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks

It should be around 1/4 inch and if the unit is new and still under warranty then you should get it repaired/replaced to avoid future issues. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Have an error code 01 on my electrolux dishwasher

Good Morning Friend, I am happy to assist you!

Typically error code ER01 indicates that a water leak has been detected under the tub of your Electrolux dishwasher. Your dishwasher may possibly need a hydraulic kit. Try unplugging your dishwasher or flipping the household circuit breaker off first. It is good to wait approximately ten minutes and turn on your appliance. If the error code continues to display, then I recommend contacting a professional to make a precise diagnosis. Best regards! - Z

Dishwasher won't drain.Leaves several inches of water in bottom of unit after cycle is complete

Check for blockages in the base of the dishwasher under filter etc.
Also make sure the kitchen drain is clear and if you have garbage disposer run it prior to running the dishwasher.

Also need to confirm if the dishwasher pump is actually operating during the drain cycle. If the pump is faulty then it will not drain. Provide full model number of dishwasher if you need further assessment of the problem. Good luck.

Most dishwashers have a soil separator which separates the soil from the water while it's washing. When a wash cycle is over a valve opens in the separator to allow the soil to go down the drain. If it's not working properly the washer will leave a film or food particles on the dishes.
It's under the lower spray arm. Post your model number and I may can find a diagram for you. Dishwasher- Inside the doorjamb on the top, left or right. On the door edge top left or right. Portable models on the back.

Water will not drain out

It sounds like the drain tube is partly clogged.
If you have a shop-vac you could try that. Try to set dishwasher back on discharge, see if water gose out the second time. if it still dont go out it is clogged. goodluck

are you in a hard water area such as florida ? do you have a water softener? if so take a can of frozen concentrate orange juice and put the frozen hunk in the bottom of dishwasher and run for one cycle. the citric acid will dissolve undisolved soap . this works much better. than vinegar which will only remain through the first cycle and then drain out as for the already grey glasses wash them in a solution of equal amounts red wine vinegar and water with just a touch of dish soap using a sponge.
