It is only possible if the dvd lence of the dvd has gone bad. drive has seperate lences for vcd and dvd. get it replaced

you could clean the lense?
or maybe you do not have sufficient software to view the DVD, i would recommend Video Lan (VLC Player) as that can play encrpted DVD's better than Windows Media Player
