Panasonic 51 " projection big screen.[ May 2001]. Convergence chips have gone. Can this be fixed and if so what would it cost for new chips?

A projection Tv convergence amps can be fixed/replaced and a competent tech will also test the yoke return resistors as well as various other components. The amps themselves are about $20.00 a piece (usually two in the circuit) depending on where they're pruchased. I suggest ACME out of Florida - only because it's real easy to buy fakes. Get only Sanyo originals and to do that you need to make sure they're purchased from a reputable supplier.
Good Luck!

scott737,
There is no kit for your repair. If your original IC's = STK392-110...
quality Sanyo-made will cost you $14.00 - $16.00 each.If you buy Panasonic packaged IC's,the part # is C5AA00000203 and they cost about $30.00 each. Use an ohm meter, your eyes and nose to locate burned resistor(s).Usually one or two 6.8 ohm
1 watt light blue color a total of twelve, I think.....However,your next step is to order / purchase first grade IC's = Panasonic is going to be your best choice.........and some 6.8 ohm 1 watt
resistors.....

The 1.2 ohm resistors should have the rating stamped on the resistors themselves. But if you would like the service manual I can post a link where you can buy one and get free unlimited tech support with the manual purchase

Convergence Issue 4 JVC AV-54WP74

I was trying to be as clear as possible, sorry. There are several resistors, both in the youke return circuit and feed circuit for the amps that should be checked with a digital or analog meter to see if they have changed in value or have opened as a result of the amp failure. If you've never tested a resistor before then I would strongly suggest having this repair done by a shop. There are several types of resistors, the ones you'll encounter here are a flameproof resistor 1 or 2 watt design respectively.
If you're attempting this you'll need a good analog or preferrably a digital meter with an ohms readout setting. Meter across the resistor and the value of the resistor should not be more than 10% of the rated value. If you read infinity you can assume the resistor is open and clearly should be replaced.
If any of this isn't clear enough then I STRONGLY suggest having a qualified technician do the repair... These are common repairs and if you lack any of the necessary testing or soldering skills you could make matter even worse...

Pan 51 "

The most common problem with this unit under those circumstances is the convergence circuit. My guess is one of the amps has failed due to a failed return resistor in the yoke circuit out in front of the amps.
That unit takes two STK392-110 Sanyo amps at Ic7001 and Ic7002 and group of 2.2 ohm 2w resistors in the return. I'd personally replace the amps with the STK392-150's or even 180's for greater reliability and test or replace all the 2.2 ohm resistors that have changed in value or opened. It's likely by what you're describing you'll find one that's open. I know personally from many repairs on this particular unit R7056 opens a majority of the time when Ic7002 fails.
Another suggestion is buy the replacement parts at a well known supplier - so you don't get any of the chineese knock-offs. Acme out of florida is a good source http://www.acme-sales.net/index.shtml you can get the resistors there as well...
Good Luck!

Convergence

Hello Socko,

By your post I gather that you have changed out the Convergence Correction Integrated Circuits? (both of them not just one) In addition you did change out the bias resistors? If so would you send a photo of the problem on the screen, and a step by step layout of what you changed out on the TV. These are needed in order to help you and so as not to revisit what you have already done. If you have not done any work to the set let me know also. This information is needed to aid you in a speedy repair of your TV device.

As far as part numbers the major components are the STK329-110s or STK329-150s which can cost from $5.99 - $16.95 depending on where you buy them from. The biasing resistors which are usually purchased in lots of 10 will cost you about $10.00 - $15.00 depending on where you buy them from.

The above parts costs are based on component level repairs. Now if you just want to replace the convergence board, then it can get costly.
The price of a convergence board can go from $75.00 - $300.00 depending on where you buy it from.

All of the costs mentioned are just for the parts alone you still have to deal with (if you have someone to put these parts in) service fees and labor fees (these are two different things).

Thank you,
Shuttle83

Alignment breakdown.....?

The most likely cause for this is a problem with the convergence circuit. This consist mainly of 2 ICs and a set of resistors. It does take some skils with soldering and electronics to replace the ICs and resistors. The 'convergence kit' is available from some web based electronic stores which includes 2 ICs - STK392-150 and a set of resistors. The authorized Hitachi supplier is Tritronics, but may be available at your local electronics supply stores. Hope this helps. clickace
