Hp pavilion dm4 laptop no display in built in display, but showing display in external display

It could be a bad video cable or a failed screen. You could try reseating the cable at both ends. You might try moving the screen forward and back to see if the screen flickers at all. That would confirm the cable. If the backlight went out on the screen itself, you should still be able to see the image under bright light on the screen. It just would not be back lighted. If the screen is bad, take it out, look at the make and model of the actual screen (a Dell laptop could have a Samsung screen, etc) and then look that up specifically on eBay or Amazon for the best price.

Black screen on laptop

When it is in that state, try hooking it up to an external display. Also look for a extremely faint image on the screen. If it's really faint you have a bad back light, if you see nothing but you get a display on an external monitor it's probably the display going bad.

I have a asus x58l and it has a black screen. cant see anything

http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/X58L/#support_Knowledge

Don't know why I did that.

Asus Support. Those two words don't even belong in the same sentence. (Neither does Toshiba Support, or Acer Support)

Notice the large statement?

NEED SERVICE?

(In otherwords GOT MONEY?)

Rant over.

Janet,

The problem will be;
1) Graphics chipset
or,
2) Video Cable,
or,
3) screen Inverter,
or,
4) LCD screen

I'm betting it's the economical, and easy to replace - screen Inverter.

Laptop on, shine a bright flashlight at the LCD screen of the laptop; and shine at various angles.

See faint images?
Backlight is out, or screen Inverter is out.
90 percent of the time the fault is the screen Inverter.

Moving on........

A) Graphics chipset:
Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect a VGA monitor to the laptop.
The VGA port is on the Back of the laptop.

This is a General example of a VGA port (Connector), and VGA Cable,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_Connector

Scroll down a little for VGA Cable example.
You can use a CRT type of monitor, (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor if it has a VGA cable.

Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.

By factory default settings, the display should show on the external VGA monitor.
IF not;

There are at least 3 display options available;

1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of laptop AND external VGA monitor
3) External VGA monitor ONLY

Hold the Fn key down, and at the SAME time; tap once on the F8 key.
The F8 key is the Display Toggle-Over key.

(User Manual indicates not all laptops, may use the same Function keys.
Whatever Asus.
The Display Toggle-Over key has LCD on it, surrounded by a rectangular line. Has a small monitor icon to the right of it )

Display on external VGA monitor? No?
Hold the Fn key down again, and tap once more on the F8 key.

No display on external VGA monitor, indicates a problem with the graphics chipset.

Display ON external monitor, indicates a problem with the;
1) Video Cable,
or
2) screen Inverter,
or
3) LCD screen

Perform the 'flashlight test'. No faint images go on to the external VGA monitor test.

Post back in a Comment.
We'll go from there.

Regards,
joecoolvette

(There are NO service manuals available, to the public.
Thank Asus for that. To procede though can be done.

This will require a partial disassembly of the laptop, to include removing the Keyboard, and Palm Rest Cover.

Together we can accomplish this if needed.

May do something I never do, and that is because of no Service Manual available. May ask you to buy a replacement screen Inverter, and replace it.
Need other information above FIRST.

Average cost is around $25 to $30.
The plastic frame in front of the LCD screen is the Display Bezel.

The screen Inverter is located behind the Display Bezel, and mounted to the bottom of the LCD screen assembly.

(Clip or a Philips head screw)

Average example,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/100-Genuine-NEW-Original-Asus-X58L-laptop-Series-LCD-Inverter-08G21VJ10107-/290873311574?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43b9668156

Doesn't require removing Keyboard, and Palm Rest Cover.
DOES require removing all power. AC adapter (Charger), and Battery.

Why does Sony laptop screen stays black when booting?

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barelysee the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can beany kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vgacable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves yourvideo card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you rebootwithout you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN(Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correctkey for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key willnormally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash lightand nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card isbad.

It's a bad backlight tube inside your LCD screen if it lights up and then dims down. Replacing the screen would be the most obvious thing to do. Replacing the backlight tube is also possible, but it requires a level of expertise that few of us have.

Fan for my acer 3690 spins, green light is on but no display show

Look to See If Your Hard Drive/Data Indicator Light is on and blinking (or solid)..
You need to try and hook up a desktop monitor to the laptops serial port.. Reboot with the External Screen Plugged Into The Laptop.. If You See Windows Booting From The External Monitor - Then You Have A Faulty Screen, or possibly a faulty Display Cable.. Most Likely The Screen Has Failed Though... Also, Hold The Screen Up To A Bright Light while its powered on, You Might have just lost the backlight and have a display still, It will be REAL faint but holding it up to a light and looking to see if you can see Windows Running..

If No Display on the External Monitor When Connected To The Laptop, Then You Have GPU/Graphics Failure, Due To Thermal Damage.. This Is A Motherboard Issue Because The Chips Are Integrated.. A ReBake/ReFlow Of The Chips Will Get Your Video Back, Or Replacing The Motherboard.....

Dell Inspiron E1705 does not show any picture

First of all, check that the laptop is set to output video to the LCD. There should be a function key which will determine whether it is outputting video to the built-in LCD, the external monitor, or both. That should be holding down your "FN" key and hitting "F8." If it is on CRT ONLY, it should switch within 1-2 keypresses.

Secondly, take a good bright flashlight and shine it directly at the LCD panel from about 1-2 inches away. If you can actually see the graphics on the screen faintly in the background, your backlight is not turning on. The backlight is literally a bulb which lights up the screen, and they can burn out. It is repairable, and shouldn't cost more than $150.00 from a reputable repair shop.

It is more than likely that it is the display that is the problem.
And your original problem may have been the display and not the motherboard.

Plugging into a different screen doesn't work

The Cold fusion lamp in your LCD and or the invertor board for the LCD could be bad that is the reason why a faint image . As for the external monitor you should enable it by the Fn+F5/F6/F7 key by pressing it twice at boot up before windows is fully loaded - this to ensure that the external monitor works with your laptop . If the resolution setting and frequency is not comaptible with external monitor you connect then you wont have display on your external monitor . Start windows in safe mode .
