My Gateway HD2201 turns on and off

My Gateway HD2201 is connected to my laptop via vga. The monitor just started turning off and on about ever 5 seconds consistantly. I have checked the plugs for the vga and power cord. What else could be causing this to turn off and on?

Open it up and look at the capacitors. The round "tin can" looking components. If the tops appear bulged, then replacing them may help. Check out the YouTube video... and web site...

I am trying to connect to gate way monitor

You need a cable from the "audio-out" from your laptop to the "audio-in" port on the Gateway, to transmit the sound to the monitor.

My screen keep going white

To me this is a hardware problem.

Let's diagnose, and see Shunka_Reid.
Connect a VGA monitor to the laptop.

A) Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect a VGA monitor to the VGA port, on the laptop.

http://support.gateway.com/s/notebook/2009/gateway/nv/NV78/NV78lv.shtml

Number 3 - External VGA display port

General example of VGA connector (port), and VGA cable,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_Connector

Scroll down a little for the VGA cable example.

You can use a CRT type of monitor, (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor if it has a VGA cable.
General example of a CRT type of monitor,

http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-a-crt-monitor.htm

B) Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.
By factory default settings, the display should show on the external VGA monitor.

IF not;
There are at least 3 display options available;
1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of laptop AND external VGA monitor.
3) External VGA monitor ONLY.

Press, and hold the Fn key down, and at the SAME time tap once on the F4 key.
The F4 key is the Display Toggle-Over key.

Still no?
Hold the Fn key down again, and tap on the F4 key once more.

Do you get a good display on the external VGA monitor?
Post back in a Comment.

Also, has the laptop ever been cleaned on the Inside, to your knowledge?

Is there a special driver for hd2201 or is the 'generic pnp monitor' driver the best/only one?

If your monitor is a Gateway FHX2201Q, then your driver is at:
http://www.support.gateway.com/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=3261

If your LCD monitor is an HD2200 series LCD monitor, then "generic PNP monitor" is it.
You can confirm by spending some time at the Gateway support site:

My monitor turns on but instantly the screen goes black its like the light doesnt work

If you look at the screen from an angle with video supplied, you will probably see a 'ghost' of the image. If that is the case, then either the fluorescent backlight itself or the inverter that supplies the high voltage for it has died. If you are somewhat careful and handy and have the required tools, this could be a DIY repair.
The fluorescent tubes are available form multiple sources and the inverter which is likely on a small, separate board, is probably available via Gateway or the original mfr.
You won't be saving a whole lot, but if the monitor was otherwise satisfactory, have at it.

When attached via HDMI, monitor goes to "sleep". When using VGA cable, no problems. Gateway website has ZERO drivers for this monitor. Running Windows 7 Ultimate x64

First shut down the pc and then plug in new monitor then boot up and see if windows 7 will auto find the monitor.

is this a single display or are you using 2 monitors, i had 2 monitors and used the other to change the display on mine when i had this problem i am also using windows 7 and reboot usually fixes display problems because it wont see old monitor any more and detect the new one.

also update any video drivers you have like nvidia or ati(catalyst controll center)
