3 year-old Goodman compressor/heat pump terribly loud @ start

I have a 3 year-old Goodman compressor/heat pump. When the unit starts for the first 30 - 60 secs the noise it makes is an extremely loud rumble that can be heard 100 yards away. After the first minute - it is louder than it should be -- more like a whining noise. Hvac guy says -- motor is out of balance -- bad bearings -- says something must have fallen and hit a blade -- I see no evidence of that. $800 estimate to repair. Does Goodman have a history of this problem?

I don't think this problem (btw I agree 'from a far distance' with the Hvac guy) is inherant to Goodman, after all the compressor (that is in the unit) is one that if found in other brands too.

Of course the compressor is under warranty so there's no charge for it - but - $800 to change out the compressor (and that's the proper fix) is a 'bit' high - you possibly could save a few bucks by getting some other estimates.

good luck!

3 ton heat pump with piston in air handler. After unit shuts down it makes loud fluid flow noise for about 2 minutes

adding a tvx will not help. the sound you here is the pressure equalizing and that has got to happen for the compressor to start again the next time. A tvx will give you a higher efficiency because it can adjust to changing temperature conditions. Only way i know to quiet the noise is to try to insulate the lines better.

Goodman Heat Pump laing heat and loud noise

Taking a little bit of time for heat is normal but the "pressure" thing you are referring to leads me to believe that the reversing valve is getting stuck. You will here that "pressure release" noise with a reversing valve but it should not be happening 5 minutes after start up.

Goodman ck36 1b a/c. Capacitor replaced 2 years ago. Unit is 13 years old and thermostat is Honeywell, also 13 years old. This summer there seems to be a 3-5 min delay (from when thermostat registers call)...

If you have a AC unit with electric or gas its doing what its supposed to do, let the pressures in the system equilize before starting again, If you have a heat pump its doing it there as well you just have not noticed. Anti cycling is a good thing, 4 to 5 minutes is normal.

My 5 ton Goodman Heat Pump won't go into heat or ac mode. Fan won't turn on. No noise from compressor. System is 1 1/2 yeras old.

Easy: Turn the "fan" switch to on at the thermostat and see if the blower starts. If no start, check breaker at breaker box. Check service disconnect at or near the air handler. With the breaker and/or service disconnect OFF check the 3 or 5 amp fuse inside the top cover in the air handler.
Not so easy: (You must know what you are doing for this part or let an HVAC Tech do it for you) Open thermostat and firmly jump the Y and R terminals to see if you get the compressor to start for no more than 30 seconds. (don't do it more than once.) Jump the G and R terminals to see if you get the blower to start. If so, u have a bad thermostat. If not, check the transformer inside the same cover in air handler for proper voltage. (24V. Make sure you also get 220 on the opposite side of the transformer)
If the blower comes on, but the heat pump doesnt start, open the side cover of the heat pump, with the thermostat on cool, and the temp. setting as low as possible for at least 10 minutes see if the contactor is pulled in. If so, check the capacitor and see if it's blown out. Be super careful these systems operate with 220v and the amperes are enough to kill you if you make a simple mistake.

Without being there to see it and have only your description in front of me, it sounds like the fan blade could be out of balance.......but it sounds more like a loose fan blade hub. Most Goodman units offer a minimum 5 year parts warranty. The Labor warranty is questionable, but the installing contractor or the Goodman Distributor should be able to give you that information. Of course this would cover manufacturer problems and not physical damage. As far as a history of this problem with Goodman..........I've seen it with every brand. If there is a problem getting it under warranty, you might be able to purchase the blade yourself. Before replacing the fan blade, I recommend disconnecting the motor wires from the contactor, tape off the ends and remember exactly where they were attached.....then start the unit to see if the noise is still evident, if so, it's probably your compressor. I recommend a certified repairman....not the one that quoted you $800.00. If you hear only the compressor start up and not the loud noise you are discribing, then try replacing the blade first.

I hope you find this information to be very helpful to you. :-)

Goodman Condenser - Heat - Buzzing Noise every 60 seconds

It could be your compressor trying to start but not being able to do so. It shouldnt happen that often but in cold temp the overload protector may cycle that quickly. I reccomemnd to have it checked to salvage the expensive compressor.
