Basically, the formatting process does not clean up your data, only the address. It is still in your memory card, can be recovered as far as you have not yet "overlapped" or "put other data on" it.
There are some good free software, you can search in google or find it here:

No, Formating erases the picture and prepares it for more pictures to be taken. Sorry

How to get pictures back if you hit the format button

Unfortunately, once you format the disk, the pictures are gone. Formatting erases everything and gets the disk ready to receive more pictures. Sorry to have to relay the bad news.

I just formated my cf card (by accident) and now my pictures are gone....what do i do?

If you did a "low level" format, the pictures may be unretrievable. But if you just did a quick format, you should be OK. Take no more pics until you've recovered the photos, take the card out of the camera. Here's some freeware photo recovery software that should be what you're looking for.

You'll need a USB CF card reader to use this software. If you don't own one, don't fret, they're very inexpensive these days. Here's one example.

Lost everything visual, just audio.

Just enter the appropriate Menu-Setting (without a picture you´ve to do this "blind") - Press "Setup" - 1x key down (=video menu) - 1x key right (switch to sub menus) - 2x key down(=video format) - press select - key up (=interlaced) and press select again - finished!
