Wired Equivalent Privacy, or WEP, key is a security setting that allows access to the wireless router to be limited to devices that have the corresponding key.Go to your wireless router software and click on the security setting section. Create a WEP key by providing a secret code or password that restricts access to the network.
Be sure to choose a key with a combination of letters, numbers and symbols. These types of codes are the most difficult to break.
Click on the wireless connections options on your wireless router software. Find your router from the list of found servers and click on security settings.
Add the WEP key that you used on the main router settings to the wireless device. A lock symbol should now appear next to the name of your wireless router from the list of available routers.
Access the Internet via your router using only devices that have the WEP installed in their wireless settings. Without it, they will not be able to complete the connections to the network. This information must be added to all wireless devices that you plan to access via the router.↲Tips & Warnings WEP provides a fairly low level of security, while still being very popular. It will keep out casual users who have accidentally found your router. However, it can be easily hacked by anyone with skill, intent and an easily available software program. Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA and WPA2) are the new standard and provide a much higher level of security.

How can I put password on my wireless router ?

Do you mean that you need to put a Password for the "Wireless Network"? i.e. network key or password to access to your wireless connection.

Access to your router, Click on "Home" then click "General Setup" icon, then you click on the "Wireless icon" check on "Security Settings" and set your "Encryption Key" (There are 4 Encryption Keys, setting one will do.

Hope it helps.

Change password

Are you asking about your wireless network password or the password to access the router control panels via a web browser?

Your wireless network requires a password if you have your network setup to be secure from outside people using it.
If you have no neighbors within wireless range and don't care about anyone accessing your home network then you can turn off the wireless encryption feature within the router control panels.
Then it won't ask for a password when you connect.

Of course a properly working network card will do that anyway since it remembers the password for you and connects automatically anyway, so I'm not sure why you'd want to remove the password.

I don't recommend removing a wireless password because it's normally stored on your laptop anyway and you only have to enter it once. Then it normally just works from then on. If there is no password then other people can use your Internet connection and slow it down, they could access your router and THEY could put a password on it, or have easier access to get into your computer.

Anyway ...
To access the router and change the settings you need to identify what IP it's on so you can log into it and view the settings. Most routers including this one has a full HTTP menu like a web site that is used to configure it.
While connected to the router (or online) go to the Start Menu, Accessories, and then Command Prompt. Start that and type in IPCONFIG and hit enter. Find the section for your network card or Ethernet, then look for the IP address called "Default Gateway" such as or

Note if you have Ethernet and wireless then there will be 2 sets of numbers. Select the one that you are using at the time for your connection. Then we use that number to access the router.

1. Launch your Web browser. Enter or whatever number you found earlier and put that into the address bar (instead of www.whatever) and press the "Enter" key. If you have the address right the router will respond and ask for the username and password.

2. Type "admin" for the username and leave the password field blank. This is the default for this router unless someone at your house changed it.

3. Click "OK". The router config screen will appear.
Find the wireless settings page and if you want to edit or remove the wireless password you can do it here. If you turn off the wireless security then it will require no password.

I recommend using an Ethernet connection for these adjustments because when you change wireless settings you'll basically hang up your connection each time you make a change and hit save. Ethernet is more likely to stay connected and doesn't care or even use the wireless password.

This is a bit complicated to write down and get every step exactly right but that covers the basics of it. If you get stuck you can refine your question or ask for clarification.

I am getting ready to switch from dial-up to satellite internet service, I have a Compaq Presario SR1730T and need to know what type of wireless router is best or will any wireless router be compatible????

Usually the internet service provider (even satellite) provides a modem/router to access the internet. This being said to purchase a wireless router must mean that you are going to "broadcast" your satellite internet throughout the house so that others in the house can access the internet.

In that case, no it doesn't really matter what kind of wireless router to buy. Just make sure you connect your satellite modem/router (what they send you) into the wireless router correctly. Also, make sure you put a password on that wireless router so that your neighbors or unknown persons do not gain access to your internet/computer.

Securing my wireless network DIR615

the password you entered should prevent people from using yor network unless they have the password. Your network will still show on other peoples settings when they check for networks to connect to, but now you have added a password for your router it should say secured next to it when they try to use your network it will ask them for the password - pin - etc... and if they do not have it then they should not be able to access your router. Why not try to see if one of your neighbours can still access it now you have protected it with a password.
