1996 pontiac grand am won't start at all. I've replaced ignition module camshaft sensor, key switch, and computer, when I changed the computer it didn't reread the key.Would the instrument cluster cause the problem?

You must perform a theft relearn procedure if any of the following components have been replaced:

Passlock?"¢ sensor

Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)

?€¢
Powertrain control module (PCM)

The above modules, with the exception for the Passlock?"¢ Sensor must also be programmed with each module's own vehicle configuration. See the individual module service manual section.
Auto Learn
Time required, approximately 10 minutes.

1. Insure that the battery is fully charged.
2. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs.
3. Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the CRANK position attempting to start the vehicle. The vehicle will start and then stall.
4. Leave the ignition switch in the ON position while observing the security indicator.
5. When the security indicator turns off, which can take up to 10 minutes, turn the ignition switch off. Wait 10 seconds.

The BCM and the PCM will learn the new code on the next start attempt.

Immobiliser system can cut spark..check this is operating correctly

First check your fuel pressure it should be 41-47 psi with key on and engine off if its below 32 psi replace the fuel pump and filter.If fuel pump checks out to be good then take ignition switch out and check for burned ignition switch wires and worn ignition key tumblers and ignition lock cylinder.These cars are known for faulty ignition switches and ignition lock cylinders.Ignition switch gets to hot then it won't start until it cools off.

1. Check fuel level in fuel tank, add fuel if empty.
2. Check battery condition and state of charge. If voltage and load test below specification, charge or replace battery.
3. Check battery terminal and cable condition and tightness. Clean terminals and replace damaged, worn or corroded cables.
4. Check fuel delivery system. If fuel is not reaching the fuel injectors, check for a loose electrical connector or defective fuse, relay or fuel pump and replace as necessary.
5. Engine may have excessive wear or mechanical damage such as low cylinder cranking pressure, a broken camshaft drive system, insufficient valve clearance or bent valves.
6. Check for fuel contamination such as water in the fuel. During winter months, the water may freeze and cause a fuel restriction. Adding a fuel additive may help, however the fuel system may require draining and purging with fresh fuel.
7. Check for ignition system failure. Check for loose or shorted wires or damaged ignition system components. Check the spark plugs for excessive wear or incorrect electrode gap. If the problem is worse in wet weather, check for shorts between the spark plugs and the ignition coils.
8. Check the engine management system for a failed sensor or control module.

These cars are well known for bad ignition switches and ignition lock cylinders.The switches get hot and melt wires causing start problems after motor has been running for 30 minutes or more.HOPE THIS HELPS!!

What happend when you turn the key? Did you change the Throttle potition sensor (TPS)?

I would be thinking that there is a good chance that you need to be checking out replacing the computer, if you aren't getting any communication with the proper scan tool then the computer isn't communicating with anything in the vehicle...... I would have guessed first off that the ignition control module might be bad but that is obviously part of the computer also, I would be looking in that direction.

Try this first, it takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start. 3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. 6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password. 7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles. Replace ignition module. Engine computer is related only to the fuel injectors. Spark is only controlled by ignition module. Make sure that you replaced the prom chip inside the computer when you did your switch as well.
