I have a mtd riding mower and it cranked up but would cut off within 30 sec. I kept starting it over and over until it finally stopped starting. Is it the battery?

Biggest concern now is, after starting it over and over, you may have burned up the starter. But the first problem most likely bad gas, drain all the gas out and loosen the fuel bowl then refill with good gas. Your battery may be drained by now from starting it so many times.

Either you are holding the key in the ON postion too long, or the starter has shorted out, remove starter for repair.

Does the negine turn freely or with alot more effort than before. If the latter then engine may be damaged. Need to check compression and try to turn over by hand without spark plug in.If you cannot turn over by hand, engine damaged.
