Router I don't need a wireless router. My two computers are sitting right next to one another and I don't anticipate getting a laptop. Can I get a hardwired router that will do the job?

I can't connect to the internet wirelessly. i don't think my linksys router is working

To connect to your wireless router, the router's wirelesssettings needs to be configured with the SSID, encryption etc. and also thewireless cards in all the laptops/computers needs to be configured with theserouter's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers can communicatewith your wireless router.
Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer.
Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL
http://192.168.1.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = admin
You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down andput it in a safe place)
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2encryption.
Now apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.

My laptop cannot connect to it, it says the signle is to low but my laptop is next to it. please help and try to fix this problem thank you :)

Hi,

Thank you for choosing FixYa!

Regarding your concern, placing a computer right next to the router is not a very good idea. Why? because it is a source of EMI (Electro-Magetic Interference), which causes:
>Inability to connect
>Intermittent Connection
>Undetected wireless signal
>and very poor wireless signal

Not only that, the equipments below are sources of EMI's
>Halogen Lamps
>Cellular phones
>Wireless phones
>Electronic Devices
>Fire Alarms
>Computer sitting on metal surfaces
>Computer sitting on carpeted floors

Here's a suggestion:
>Place the computer at least 6ft away from the router
>Make sure that there are no equipments mentioned above, within 3ft near the router
>Open a browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome, or Ubuntu) anything will do.
>Then access your router's page by typing 192.168.1.1 on the address bar of your browser and hit Enter.
>Logon to your router by leaving the Username blank and in the Password box just type "admin" (without the quotation marks " " )
>Click on the Channels and SSID link under Wireless. (as shown below)
>The only thing you can play with wil be the channels.
>There only are 3 Clear Channels that you need to choose from. Channel 1, 6, and 11
>Switch channels between those 3 mentioned above and check which channel has the Excellent signal and save the settings by clicking Save below the page

The router needs to sit near the phone line.

Wireless connection disconnects when not next to router

make sure that your not using Cordless phone and dont sit near to metal cabinet and see the direction of Wiress Router/Access points.

just make sure you get excellent or good signal from the wireless device, and delete ur existing wireless profile and re-create new one.

Purchased a Belkin (N150) router this morning along with a new laptop. Problem - I can't get the laptop to accept the router. Don Hood

Is there any other computer connected to the network and able to go online.
If yes then check the wireless settings of the router.
If the laptop is the only 1 computer then you will need to connect the laptop to the router and open the router set up page and check the wireless settings.

Wireless speed

First you need to check what is the standard of your wireless adapter that is installed on your computer(to check this well you need to grab the manual or check the specification of the computer or adapter) if it's wireless b 802.11b the maximum speed that you'll be getting is 11Mbps regardless if your router supports N standard 802.11n which can get you through a maximum of 230 to 280Mbps tops.

Second, check the wireless settings of your router make sure that the wireless mode is set to auto or mixed.

Newtwork connection

You have the right device to connect the two computers on your home network. Once you are connected to the router and internet on both computers, make sure that both computers are members of the same workgroup name.

While both computers are on, go to My Network Places and click on view workgroup computers, you should see the other computer as well as the one you are sitting at.
