Looking for updated bios for this laptop. It has bios 576A1100 installed, looking for a newer bios to upgrade the processor to i7-640m

Bios upgrades, if available, are gotten from the manufacturer of the laptop. And remember that bios updates are fraught with all sorts of risks - nothing is guaranteed and so much can go wrong rendering your equipment useless!

Go to the attached link and look up the benchmark for the processor you have and what you want to upgrade to assuming that on your laptop you have a snap in and not soldered processor. PassMark Software CPU Benchmark Charts

There should be an appreciable, really significant difference in processor speed to even justify the danger of what you are contemplating, say at least twice what you have. And given the price of current high end i7 chips the transformation will not be cost effective. If you had a desk top, you could tweak your OS and throw in a super hot video card but you have a laptop with limited if any upgradability.

I have an Acer Aspire 5315 model. It is about 3 years old now. I have upgraded the ram as it has two slots so it now runs vista sp1 beteer with 2gb ram. I know how and where my processor chip is, I would...

It should be possible but i would recommend you not to..
usually you will be able to upgrade it to a 2.2 at most in your computer but its not a big difference in performance to really do it.
If you can reinstall your Windows it would help you a lot, or upgrade to win 7

Like to replace my processor which is AMD Duron 900MHz to Motherboard Gigabyte 7VM333M-RZ. Which current processors are compatible with this board? Please advise. I want a current fast processor.

Hi, As far as I can see, this motherboard is very old, and the faster processor you could get would be around 1.8 ghz, single core. Here's the list of supported processors:
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Gigabyte/7VM333M-RZ.html
What I would suggest is that you buy a motherboard/cpu combo, then you could get a quad core with a recent motherboard for less than 150-200$. Of course you'd have to be willing to change your motherboard, but unfortunately, you're not gonna get a good processor with your current motherboard, and computer parts (like Ram, hard drives, video cards) are going to cost more and more for their rarety, while they are less performant.
Best of luck to you!

Heat sink fell off processor

Go to your local Staple,Radio Shack or Best Buy and get a new heat sink and fan assembly, if you are lucky it will thread through the motherboard so you can reset it onto the processor chip. DO NOT PUT SUPERGLUE ON THE PROCESSOR.
AND DO NOT RUN COMPUTER WITHOUT HEAT SINK AND FAN IN PLACE OR ELSE>

Upgrading my processor without changing my motherboard

A pentium 3 processor is probably in a Socket 370 socket.

None of the current processors would fit in this socket, so you would want to look at second-hand computer stores / markets or maybe in your local classifieds.

It might be worth checking what speed processors your motherboard can support up too before buying one.

Sony Vaio VGN CR-220E

Haha!

I had such dreams too with one of my old Vaio. I really wanted to upgrade the processor and graphic chipset. Turns out that the latter is impossible (it was soldered to the motherboard - it wasn't a graphics card, just an all-in-one chip), as for the processor I was able to take it out but I ran into several problems:
1) vaio added electronic components to the motherboard that made higher CPU speeds unachievable even if the motherboard's cipset (VIA) was able to do that.
2) the cpu maker (AMD in my case) kept telling me that their mobile cpu were custom designed for that specific laptop, so new cpu would be incompatible. Also mobile CPUs are, apparently, only sold to laptop makers, unlike OEMs... (eBay but at ur own risk!).
3) When buying a new CPU, u need to check factors such as the number of pins (mobile cpu are much smaller), voltage, current, wattage and heat dissipation (very important, ur current heat sink was designed for ur current cpu).

But maybe things have changed now. In my case, I could only upgrade the RAM and the hard-drive to larger and faster versions, and the difference was quite significant difference. Faster booting and better internet experience.
