I have a Brother MFC-8670. When we print we get a clicking sound from the left side of the printer and no paper is fed and a paper jam error is received. When we fill the tray to the top with paper, the printer will still make a clicking sound, but the copy is printed. I suspect a problem with the part that raises the tray so the rollers can pick up a sheet. How can I fix this problem?
I had exact same problem. Take your tray out and at the back of the tray is a small square blue button. Look at it closely. It pushes one way to lock, the opposite way to unlock. If it is locked, you won't get your paper. Push it to the unlocked position. Now try to print. I think the problem happens if you push the tray in too roughly and the button gets pushed into the wrong position accidentally.
Try REMOVING the white caked up paper dust from the pickup roller located at the front of the paper tray. Next, clean the pickup roller with either 409 or Fantastic all purpose holdhold cleaner using a Q-Tip or a rag.

The message that ask you to manually feed the paper will appear if you have recently printed on a different type of media.
Does this happen from only one application like Microsoft Word? If it does try printing a test page or a document from other application like Notepad or Wordpad.
If the same issue occurs go to the Printers folder (under control panel) then right click on your Brother printer icon, left click on Properties, click on Printing Preferences and make sure that Tray 1 is selected for the tray, Plain paper for paper type. If changes have been made make sure to click on the apply button to apply the changes.
If it only happens to one application like Microsoft Word. Click on File ( or the orb icon on the upper left hand corner) then Print, then Print again click on Printing Preferences and make sure Tray 1 is selected and Plain Paper.
Hope this helps!
Just clean the pick up rollers with water + a dash of meths and a drop of detergent, de-fluff the paper separation shoe and rollers on the paper trays. Reset the PF Kit 1 counter (PF = paper feed) and carry on.

Slide the gray paper guides to fit the size of the paper
Using both hands put the paper (side to be printed, face up) in the manual feed slot until you feel
the front edge of the paper touch the paper feed roller. Let go of

You must then go to the application that you want to print to
the paper and use that application's paper settings to set the
paper size, orientation, font, style, etc
Sounds like there is still paper in there, carefully move the carriage assembly to the left and look in with a flashlight, also check the left side with the light. Usually paper gets wrinkled and shoved to one side or the other.
Had a similar problem with the MFC-885cw. Turns out that , if you have a photo paper tray installed which sits just above the main tray, you need to puill it all the way back towards you otherwise it blocks the paper feed. Not the best design feature I've ever seen.
Does it make the same sound if you feed the single sheet through the bypass with the paper drawer removed?
I hate to say it, but your printer's paper feed mechanism may need replaced.
Go to http://www.brother-usa.com/AskUs/default.aspx and ask Brother to diagnose this one; I think they'll confer with me and should be able to point you to a nearby Brother-authorized repair center.
Let me know what happens!
