checked updated even before receiving your suggestion and checked now ... last update 04/30/10.
the only available ones now are for safari (which i don't use) and iTunes update, which is not
necessary. these two updates cannot be hidden or made inactive on this computer.

also updated disk utility ... normally this fixes any glitches ... still unable to open desktop-screen
saver ... where do we go from here?

  • spacemonk985 May 12, 2010

so far none of the solutions helped ... have gone through everything ... checked out likes from
solution#2 .. none of thos downloads are acceptable on this computer ... this is really
    weird ...

Hi. Corrupted wallpaper file (.jpg) can cause the desktop pane crash. Please try this:
1. create a new folder on your desktop
2. cut all pictures in /Library/Desktop Pictures and paste it in the newly created folder (this is just for testing purposes only and you can move it back to its original location)
3. open desktop and screen saver pane.

lf you don't get the error, cut and paste the wallpaper pictures one by one and see which picture gives you the error.

If you still get the same error, let me know and will think of other possible solution.

Thanks for using FixYa.

do not have a library/desktop pics folder (searched computer just in case)
am not using screensaver ... only pick one picture at a time as desktop wallpaper

if you can find something else, that would be great ....
research here tells me that this is an "old bug" and has been reported to apple (don't know when)
just wondering ... if this is an old bug, why it showed up on my computer all of a sudden ...

Please post the logs so i can look what is causing the crash. Open Desktop & Screen Saver preferences pane and after the crash, open the logs, copy and paste it here or send it to my email (blkc4us@yahoo.com). Logs are located at /Library/Logs/

    Thank you.

    May 15, 2010-
Please post the logs so i can look what is causing the crash.i know my way around this computer .... cannot find any logs ...

Open Desktop & Screen Saver preferences pane and after the crash,
open the logs, copy and paste it here or send it to my email
(blkc4us@yahoo.com). Logs are located at /Library/Logs/

when i open the desktop & screen saver preference pane, all i get is the same message i originally
posted for assistance ... there are no logs to open, copy and paste here to you ... searched everywhere for "library/logs" .... came up with nothing ... which leads me to a question ... does apple mac OS X 10.4 work the same way on a macbook as it does on a regular computer? ... you do know
    that i'm on macbook ...

Yes, I know you are using Macbook with OSX 10.4. The locations I am giving you are standard and I don't understand why you can't find them. Please verify that you have the Library folder. If you don't have that folder, that may be the reason why your Desktop & Screen Saver preferences pane is crashing because it is looking for a folder that doesn't exist anymore.

Please let me know if you have or don't have the "Library" folder so I can think of other solutions.

    Thank you.

  • spacemonk985 May 16, 2010

when you first told me to look for "library/logs" ... that's all i searched ... yes, do have the 'library'
folder .... and it has logs ... in the 'crash logs' this is what is there (the only folder which has anything to do with this problem) don't know if this is what you're looking for ... knowing my way
around does not include this techie stuff!

The screensaver effects is causing the crash. It is either corrupted or accidentally deleted.

Make a folder in your desktop, cut "DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefPane" from "/System/Library/PreferencePanes" and paste it to the folder you just created. If you can't find the file, it is probably deleted.

Manually copy "DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefPane" from either a time machine backup before the crash or from distribution disk image to "/System/Library/PreferencePanes".

If you have a time machine backup, you could restore "DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefPane" from there. Otherwise, you can download an application named Pacifist which will allow you to extract "DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefPane" from your install DVD.

    You can download it here:

    Hi again,

    - If you copied the JPEG files/default pictures (which you used in your screen saver) to Library/Desktop folder, it may cause problem.

Try to move and open them from their orijinal places, (open SysPrefs, go to Desktop and Screen Savers Pane.). Try on the Desktop and Screen Savers tabs.

    Hope this helps.

How do you get Windows 10 free update from Windows 8 to operate the screen saver?

How to customize Screensaver in Windows 10
RECOMMENDED: Click here to fix Windows errors and optimize system performance
There were times when computer monitors used to suffer from image burn-in issues caused by showing the same image for a long period of time and people used to install a screen saver to avoid the issue. The computer screens today no longer face the burn-in issues, but people still use the screen saver on their computer systems for fun's sake. Windows 10 comes with a six built-in screensavers. Let us see how you can customize screensavers in Windows 10.
Read: Are Screensavers necessary and still needed.
Screensaver Settings in Windows 10 You can get to your screen saver settings directly by typing 'Screen Saver' in the taskbar search box in the lower left corner of your system. Click on 'Change Screen Saver' and it will take you the Screen Saver settings right away where you can adjust the settings according to your own preferences.
Alternatively, right-click on your Windows 10 desktop, and select Personalize to open Personalization settings. Next click on Lock screen in the left pane.

Scroll down the Lock Screen settings and click on Screen Saver Settings. The following window will open. Here you can adjust the settings according to your preferences.

By default, Windows 10 offers the following six screensavers - 3D Text, Blank, Bubbles, Mystify, Photos and Ribbons - nothing new here. Select the screensaver from the drop-down menu and change its defaults Settings, if any are available.
For instance, the 3D Text screensaver lets you customize the text as well as a few other options.

The Photos screensaver lets you display your favorite photos as a screen saver.

Once you are done, click on save and exit.

Create Screen Saver Settings Shortcut

If you access the screensaver settings frequently, you can create its desktop shortcut as follows: However, it is easy to change the settings but if you change your screen saver often, it would be better to create a Screen Saver Settings shortcut on your desktop.
To create the shortcut, you have to right-click on your desktop and click on New > Shortcut.
Type control desk.cpl,,@screensaver in the location space in the wizard.
Click Next and give a name to your shortcut. Click Next and you are done. Give it a suitable icon of your choice.
Use this shortcut to change or adjust your screen saver settings whenever you want, quickly.
You can also create a shortcut to launch or change Screensaver state for a specific screensaver.

Black and white or negative screen resolution in Mac OS X

A black and white display, or negative screen resolution, is an issue which can occur within the various Mac OS X system versions ranging from Mac OS X 10.3 to Mac OS X 10.6.

It can appear as an anomaly which can leave a Mac User dumbfounded, not sure what is going on.

At one time your screen is normal like this, but then somehow,

f5e9feb.jpg

the screen changes into this strange negative, inverted screen.

749233a.jpg

So how does this occur?

The answer is more simple than you think.

An inverted screen like the one you see in the screen shot above, is not actually an anomaly, or the result of some sudden strange happenstance. What's more, chances are, this occurred because of what you did.

Its an easy fix however, because the only way your Mac OS X desktop screen can turn into a negative or black and white resolution, from its normal color resolution, is if a setting within your Mac OS X system has been modified.

To return your screen back to the normal color resolution, follow these steps:

* Click on the Apple menu icon, located on the upper left corner of your Mac OS X desktop screen.

* From the drop down menu, select System Preferences.

* Within System Preferences, select the pane (in System Preferences, Apple references all icons as "panes") entitled "Universal Access".

9e2fb26.png
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quick Note About Universal Access:
The reason this System Preferences pane is known as"Universal Access", is due to the purposes Apple designed it for. If you notice the image for this pane above, this symbol for this feature, is similar to a placard or sign you would see on a car license plate, parking space, door or building, for an individual who has a disability or is handicapped.

Universal Access was designed to enhance features like Voice-over speech (your Mac talks to you), screen size, display settings, keyboard and mouse settings for those Mac users who are vision impaired, hearing impaired and /or physically disabled.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* For the next steps in the process:

Click on the Universal Access pane.
If you look in the screen shot, under Display, you will see that the current setting is "White on Black".

3c0ac8f.jpg

Click on the radio button entitled "Black on White"
and this is the window you will see:

80ee972.jpg

Back to normal!

042f88a.jpg

That is all it takes, to return your desktop screen resolution back to normal.

This is why you were suggested as the probable cause" for your desktop screen to go into Inverted mode. Chances are you may have been in System Preferences, clicked on the Universal Access pane, and in exploring settings, may have clicked the Display setting and the
White on Black radio button, causing the screen to go into
the inverted mode or change in gray scale.

Another theory could be that you may have accidentally pressed the Ctrl-Alt-Apple Command keys on your keyboard, combined with either < > keys, depending on if you were in process of' increasing or decreasing contrast on your Mac's screen or display.

The true purpose of the inverted screen mode or change in gray scale, is to aid Mac Users who may be sensitive to the bright normal colors, that you and I see on the standard Mac OS X display screen, due to poor or failing vision.

So now that your screen is back to normal, if you should see an inverted display, or screen that resembles a negative resolution, like that of a photo negative, you know how to correct this issue.

For more information on Universal Access, click here.

My macbook screen keeps going off but the macbook is still running it occurs

The screen sleep is set for a different period than the hard disk sleep. This can be changed in the Energy Saver Preference Pane.
1. Launch System Preferences
2. Select Energy Saver (its icon is a CFL bulb)
3. Select Battery or Power Adapter settings. The upper slide allows you to set the elapsed time until your computer sleeps, while the lower slide allows you to adjust the elapsed time for the display to sleep. There are several chackboxes to further refine when your computer or its display sleeps to save power.

Why my MAC G5 turn off when the sleep mode is on

You may have your energy settings set to turn off the Mac after a specific time of inactivity. The power on / off option is in the Schedule button in the Energy Saver pane in system preferences under the Apple menu.

Computer turns off unless constantly using... even put to sleep, it turns off instead.

Hi, Sorry you are having problems,
Sounds to me like either your energy saving preference pane is set WAY too short or it is corrupt.
Go to your system preferences and select (Energy Saver) and be sure it is set to never sleep and set the idle time to screen sleep time to about 30 minutes and be sure the button ( Shutdown instead of sleep ) is not selected... if you have that button.
Try these, then do a restart to be sure they take.
If you still have the same problem, then, your settings are corrupt, you will need to delete it:
go into your hard drive, into your user folder, into the library folder into the preferences folder and find this file:
com.apple.systempreferences.plist

put it in the trash, empty trash, restart the computer the reset your energy saver settings and you should be OK!

Open your System Preferences. Go to Dashboard & Expose. This is a very helpful application in my world. Whenever you want to see all the windows, hide windows, start screen saver, you just push your mouse into the appropriate corner. Sounds like you have a corner set and when you hit it, you trip the effect. Change the corner and check them out, Handy to use when you have multiple windows open. Experiment and see.
