Question about Garden

A fellow firefighter was cutting with his Echo

A fellow firefighter was cutting with his Echo CS-440, it was running great, cutting fine he had completed a few cuts to get the tree on the ground and had run through 2 tanks of fuel. He is using Echos brand 1 gal mix in a 1 gal container. As he was getting ready to start on the trunk the saw locked up. The dealer said he was running too lean and he is SOOL due to not having proper mix, and estimated a non warranty repair of over 300.00. My question is if he was using this saw and had run multiple tanks why would the saw all of the sudden lock up, it is only a year old and has always started and ran fine using the same mix from teh onset. Another question would be is 300 a reasonable price for the repair of an otherwise perfect saw. Would the cylinder be cracked or would it be able to be saved. Just trying to help a fellow firefighter and save him a few bucks, he is well aware of fuel mix ratios in regard t oseveral of our ventilation saws needing different ratios due to age of saw. Thanks for any suggestions and stay safe.

The cylinder (if engine running too lean) would be badly scored as well as the piston and rings. Knowing today's prices for parts and labor, $300 is probably not too far off. At that price though, he might consider replacing the entire saw rather than repair. I have noticed a number of Echo saws that don't seem to 4-stroke when running at speed, but not cutting. A properly tuned 2-stroke should always 4-stroke at speed, but immediately 2-stroke when cutting--this produces the most power and least heat. The fuel should always be premixed in the can, agitated well during mixing and again before using in the saw. Agitate the saw after adding the new fuel as well. At 50:1 ratios, there isn't much spare lubrication in the engine. He might consider another brand of saw if buying new. Hope some of this helps!

Cs 400, first time cutting great, then the saw did not cut perfectly. Recently it worked poorly. When I push the saw a little bit hard against the log, the saw did not running(the engine is working)

suggest you sharpen the chain, sounds like it's dull like maybe the log you cut had been fallen on ground for awhile, this causes dirt build up in bark and acts just like cutting Dirt and we all know what that does to your chain...dulls it fast ! I learned from experience I cut an oak tree that was cut down for about 2 years when I got permission to cut it up,needless to say it had a lot of dirt in the bark! hope this helps you !

Are you certain you have the chain on the right direction? Sounds like you may have it on backwards. A new chain should cut easily almost without effort unless it has come in contact with stones or metal or something equally hard. Hope this helps

My CS-440 starts but won't throttle up, it cuts out and dies. Just did a tune up and it did not fix it.

Check the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. Check the fuel lines for decay or other problems. Make sure to have fresh fuel mix in the tank. If this does not help, try turning the H jet screw CCW about 1/4 turn to see if that helps. Proper adjustment is when the engine 4-strokes at speed with no load, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Good luck!

unleaded fuel is notorious for going stale, and it can leave a resinous coating in the carb-try running the saw on half choke with new gas and less oil eg 50 to 1 for say ten minutes, this should clear the gunk out-if this does not work, you have two choices-strip and clean the carb,or adjust the H (high) scew on the carb anti-clockwise by a quarter turn a time till it revs out full bore-good idea to remove the chain and wear ear defenders when adjusting-and always use a chainsaw at its max rpm,or you run the risk of "kickback"

Pull the spark plug, dump in about half a teaspoon of fuel and try to start it. I think you have a carb problem or low compression.
