Unfortunately, you can't use two routers together in that manner. You must have a device in between them such as a switch or bridge or you'll have to disable the DHCP server settings in the second router. The second router then pretty much becomes a switch you may then use all the ports on the second router with the exception of the WAN port it must remain unoccupied. However, if you need wireless connectivity in another location far away from your main router then your only solution would be to indeed purchase an actual access point/bridge device

Have you tried the laptop on another wireless network? It should release and renew it automatically when you reboot the laptop without having to reset the router. And it sounds like the router itself is glitzed. But i would try using the laptop wireless on another router somewhere and also try connecting some other wireless device to the router to analyze the problem. You could also try setting the laptop's ip to a fixed ip number instead of obtain automatically (it must be in the same range as the router - first three numbers needs to be same as the router's) and see if it's the dhcp that is the problem.

A few years ago there were a lot of glitzy linksys routers ...

Need cd for downloading program

Assuming you are trying to install a router.... routers do not use drivers or software. CD's provided with Routers are generally used to walk you through the installation/setup process. Most Linksys routers are default accessible at 192.168.1.1 via your browser. the default username is admin and the password is usually admin. If this does not work, try resetting the router by pressing the rest button located on the back of the unit (small hole) with a paperclip. hold the button in for about 1 minute and then release it... If you are unlucky enough to have a unit with a flashing power lite, this is a dead unit and is not repairable. Look up your model for more specific instructions on www.linksys.com under the support section.

Wireless router install on cable modem w/static ip address set

Connect a computer to linksys lan port 1-4, point browser to linksys http://192.168.1.1 under Setup->Basic Setup->Internet Settings choose "Static IP" and fill in the fields below... the field for gateway should be set to the static ip of your cable modem. the field for netmask should probably be 255.255.255.0. It may help to turn on DHCP for local network so that lan hosts can get their ip's from the linksys.
