I put the sd card in a portable card reader to see if I could download my pics before reformatting, but my pc gives me a message telling me the card is not formatted and do I want to format. I am affraid formatting this way will also delete all my photos. I will try to use my HP pc's cardreader when I get home, but what do I do if I get the same error message? How can I retrieve my photos from the card before formatting?

Use a card reader and transfer the pictures to a computer, if you haven't already done so, then format the card in the camera.

In the future, get out of the habit of leaving your pictures on a memory card. To prevent reoccurrences of this problem, you should format the card each time you finish downloading your pictures to your computer. If you want to use your camera as a digital photo frame, put those pictures on a different card (using a card reader, as the camera won't let you write to a card from a computer).

If nothing will read your card, then nothing will read it. You can try card recovery software (google the web for this), it might be able to save at least some of your pictures.

Do you usually download some pictures and delete some, without formatting the card? If so, you may have to chalk this up as a learning experience.

The SD card 512mb has been working fine about 3 years, then the camera started taking only blank photos. What can I do?

SD cards can fail. # years on a SD card may be all you'll get. Try another card to see if you can record pictures on it. If so, then the card has gone bad. If not , then the camera needs a repair shop.

Dear Bill,
It seems that your SD card is corrupted now, you cannot do anything to recover that. try formating it see if it works or not if no then all you need is to replace it with a new SD Card. or you can try out your local photo shops if they have any solutions.
SD cards are just like old Floppy disks, no one knows when they get corrupted.
Sorry

When trying to playback photos from SD Card, the message "cannot playback image" is displayed. Happens when using more than one SD card, which rules out that it is the SC card that isn't working.

which rules out that it is the SC card that isn\'t working Not necessarily, switching SD memory card from one camera to another without formatting isn't going to happen. If the SD card was new and not formatted in the camera that it's going to be used in then there could be a lot of different errors occurring. Also if pictures were downloaded from the memory card to the computer and the card not formatted this will cause a problem as well. If you have been deleting the pictures files then again this could be a problem the card needs to be formatted. Another IF is if you downloaded pictures from the computer to the SD card and then put it back in the camera without formatting then it's not going to acknowledge the card. If you formatted the SD card in the computer then it's not going to work or work properly in the camera. Picture files can go from the camera to the computer but not back again because the computer operating system and software is not compatible with the camera firmware. It all comes back to format the memory card in the camera you are using it in before taking pictures.

Take no more pics until you've recovered the photos, take the card out of the camera. Here's some freeware photo recovery software that should be what you're looking for.

You will need to use a flash card reader with this software. If you don't have one, get one, they're inexpensive.

The reason this occurred is that you likely never formatted the card. The card will work fine in the beginning but the file structure will eventually corrupt. AFTER you've recovered the photos, format the card in your camera to prevent this from happening again. Keep in mind formatting will also totally erase your card, so again only do this after you've recovered the photos.

Here's some freeware photo recovery software that should be what you're looking for. They all work well, but recommend out of the four listed software using "PC Inspector Smart Recovery", as it's the most thorough in recovering photos:

You will need to use a flash card reader (the one on your laptop should work fine) with this software.

Problem with taking picture with SD card

The only thing I can recommend is using the brands of memory cards that Casio recommends. They are Panasonic, San Disc, Toshiba. Make sure the card is formatted with the camera before use.

Please tell me the make and model of camera. Some have internal memory and unless that is switched off through their menu option, you'll never get images written to the SD card.
