Question about Craftsman 25cc Gas Line Trimmer

1 Answer

Weed wacker starts and runs but only on idle or part throttle. Full throttle stalls. New gas and plug does not help at all. when tank gets empty it runs like a raped ape for about 20 seconds before the fuel runs out.

My guess is you are getting way too much fuel. (Runs with choke "on" too? Maybe a little smoke with the correct oil ratio?) If that is true then there are 2 possible solutions. First has anyone tampered with any of the set screws on the carb? If no DON'T touch em. It runs good at the end (20 seconds of raped ape) because at that point the fuel air mix balances out for a short period. But its in a aberrant mode, normally it would putter down and out. Flooding or "too much fuel" happens from 2 causes usually. one is you got a tiny spec of dirt, or gas varnish, or recrystallized whatever holding the needle valve open, letting too much fuel in. Try pulling off the fuel lines from the carb and spraying in some Gumout or carb cleaner, let it sit 5 min. Spray again, then blow out the passages in both directions with a compressed air source or a clean separate vinyl hose piece you can blow thru. Make sure the air filter isn't full of silt and dust. (Not enough air can cause this too, but its a bit different...not by much though) After you clear out the carb reconnect the lines and try it again. Let me know what happens. If the set screws were tampered with, I then have another set of steps to follow.

And the second cause of flooding is the needle valve is mis-adjusted. The fix for that however requires a complete teardown of the carb. Is the weed wacker old? Because if its new (like 1 or 2 seasons) then I would bet the spray cleaning will do it. Small 2 cycle engines are notoriously sensitive to dirt and dust particles both in the air and the fuel. Remember while you are cutting any dirt and dust kicked up can and does get pulled into the engine. Sometimes the build up makes its way into the carb. Oh, while you are spraying in the cleaner, work the throttle, a lot. And remove the carb cover and spray out the air intake while you're at it.

Why won't my FeatherLite FL-20C weed eater will not stay running when I put it in full choke. What could be wrong?

It should run ok after warming up. After starting it, let it run for a minute or so and then try gradually opening the choke. You might try increasing the throttle setting at the same time. After the motor is hot, if you have to have the throttle setting increased in order to keep it running it means the idle setting needs to be increased, usually by turning a screw to keep the fuel valve from closing so much, or that there is a problem with the fuel a clogged jet or fuel passage in the carb.

Craftsman weed wacker will start and run

Are you sure you have the right fuel mixture? Many of these require 2 Cycle oil to be added to the gas. If fuel is right, you may have a vacuum leak at the carb (or crack in base where it mounts to the engine). My weedwacker needed to be run on half choke for about 10 min before it got hot enough to run with choke off.

Weed Eater Problems

If it runs with the choke closed then it's not getting enough gas. Check the gas filter on the end of the gas line in the gas tank. Remove the gas cap and using a piece of wire with a hook on the end, reach in the tank and pull the gas line out through the opening. Check the filter on the end of it. You could also have a burst-ed diaphragm in the carburetor. This sucks the gas from the tank to the carb. If that's the case a new weed eater may be in order unless you can find someone with the parts to repair it. Also check the gas lines for leaks or breaks, 2 of them.

Hard start tb475ss troy built weed wacker when i close the cold start lever it starts but its 75 degrees out its like the primer ball is inop but i see fuel moving through the lines when priming did not...

These 4 cycle trimmers need to be primed 10x before a cold start. The bulb will feel *firmer* on the last two or three depressions and you'll know that the carb is primed.

Full choke and and full throttle on first tug should see it hit once with a puff of smoke. Second start attempt should be in choke position two (half choke) and with full pressure on the throttle. Should rev to life on start attempt. Let the engine IDLE for 30 seconds, moving the choke to off at the end of the waiting period. Let engine idle to warm another full minute with no choke, then set to work!

Only runs on full throttle

Are you saying full throttle, or full choke? if full throttle, you should be able to set the idle up. the idle screw will be the one when you give it gas, it will be the screw on you'r throttle linkage. If full choke, maybe the spark arrestor is plugged. You can remove it by removing the muffler. It would be between the muffler and cylinder head. You don't need this to run.I hope any thing I posted will help.

Craftsman 25cc Convertible weed wacker

Yes, a simple carburetor cleaning will do the trick. Disassemble the carb. and spray with carb. cleaner. Make sure the small screen is free from debris. Clean the small portals with a Den Tek Brush ( They work great for this job. Reassemble and start.
If this doesn't do it, buy a new carb. kit and replace all appropriate parts.

Redmax weed wacker wont stay running

Have these unit been stored with fuel in them or sitting around for a long period of time? If so the carbs may need to be overhauled. Also check for a clogged fuel filter and vacuum test the fuel lines for cracks.
