    many thanks for your advice Hollyecho!(love that name). this problem with laptops appears to be very common, also very annoying, as my guarantee has only ran out 2 months ago!

    I did try cleaning, but it is more of a fault with the actual workings of the horrid thing!

    if any other members are totally stuck, here is what i am currently doing, but beleive me, it really slows down the typing process! ... to use the on-screen keyboard...

    1. start

    2. accessibility options

    3.click on "on- screen keyboard"

    4. ensure curser is flashing wherever you require letter

    5. click arrow over required letter on-screen.

    It is by no means ideal, but better than having a useless laptop lying around! what extortionately expensive things these are, just to get 14months useage of!!!

    all the best

    sack-o-spuds!

You can try to remap the key to other functional keys which you seldom use eg. home/ pg up/ pg down

Try google for KeyTweak and this nifty software would do the trick...

Depending on the laptop, (is this a laptop?), this is mostly caused my dust, dirt, or moisture. Try a dry soft brush, a ladys makeup brush works really well, then using canned air to blow out the keys. If this is a desktop - new keyboards are only about 10 dollars, I would just buy a new one.

    You can replace keyboards on laptops also, you can get them on ebay, or from your laptop manufacture. I have replaced 4 or 5 this past year, and some are very easy - to the bazzarly complicated depending on your model, but, if you like I could send instruction if you give me the make and model of your laptop.

How do I turn on my touch pad on an Asus lap top?

Please try the Fn+F6 or Fn+F8 key combinations. If you look at the Function keys in the keyboard, they will have symbols on them in Blue color, the same color as the Fn key. Find the symbol that resembles a touchpad like a mouse/box with finger , then hold down the Fn key and press that Function key, ie, F6 or F7 or F8. This will enable/disable the touchpad.

What function do the f1, f2, f3, f4, f5, f6, f7,...keys serve on an ASUS?

The function keys use depends on the computer. Usually, manufacturers have the keys marked with some picture that reveals what each is used for. Examine the keyboard. You can also press each key and see what happens. WARNING: A key may disable some functionality of the computer. So before you start pressing the Function keys, read the manual.

Hi, am ganesh functions keys

If those are the only keys on the key board that are not responding, I would try to
1. boot in safe mode and check response. If you have other keys on the laptop that are not working,
2. I would boot operating system from a flash drive and check

and if both still are not working for you
3.try an external key board

Last replace the key board

Hope this helps

How do I enable a compaq laptop's keys

Compaq Presario computers provide users with a row of function keys for added keyboard functionality. Function keys can serve a dual purpose as well.
Function keys are located at the top of Compaq Presario keyboards.
By learning how function keys work on a Compaq Presario you can take advantage of time saving keyboard shortcuts.Purpose
Use function keys to access menus, save changes and create shortcut keys.
Various applications, including Microsoft Office, allow you to select a function key as a shortcut key for running specific tasks. These settings are usually found under the Tools, Settings or File menu.
Each Compaq Presario computer has twelve function keys.
The most common used keys are "F2," "F8," "F10" and "F12."
The first three are used mainly to access and use the Compaq BIOS. "F12" is used to access a set of run from options during the boot process.

How to Access
Access function keys on a Compaq Presario by pressing any of the keys on the top row of the keyboard. Access the key's dual purpose by first pressing the "Fn" key located on the bottom row of keys.
Use function keys as shortcut keys by pressing them anytime while in the desired application. Remember, you must set them as shortcut keys first.
Note that some programs may already have certain function keys set as shortcuts.
Open menus and view the shortcut keys beside each menu item before setting your own shortcuts.

Dual Uses Each function key has a dual use. Press "Fn" plus the desired function key for the key's other use.
Below each function number is a small picture within a square or rectangle.
This dictates the dual use. "F1" opens help and support. "F2" serves as a printer shortcut.
Open your homepage by pressing "F3."
If you use dual monitors, switch between monitors by using "F4." "F5" puts your computer in stand-by mode.
Quickly lock your computer by pressing "F6." "F7" and "F8" adjust the screen's contrast.
Play and pause your music in Windows Media Player or other default media player by using "F9."
Press "F10" to stop playing media. Skip ahead or rewind media by using "F11" and "F12."

Other "Fn" Keys

In addition to function keys, the "Fn" key is also provides other keys with a dual use.
Any key with a small square on the key has a dual purpose such as the "scroll," "insert" and "delete" buttons.
Since laptop keyboards have no number pads, certain keys serve as the number pad by pressing the "Fn" key.

I need to know what the keys f1-f12 keys usage.

The uses for the function (f1-f12) keys varies based on which program you have open at the time. Different programs use them for different things.

However, your computer also has some default uses for these keys when combined with pressing the fn (function) key.

fn + f1 locks computer

fn + f2 changes our power use profile

fn + f3 puts the computer to sleep

fn + f4 puts the computer into hibernation mode

fn + f5 changes the display/output mode

fn + f6 decreases the screen brightness

fn + f7 increases the screen brightness

fn + f8 enables/disables wireless connections

fn + f9 enables/disables the touch pad

fn + f10 turns the cursor overlay on/off

fn + f11 turns the numeric overlay on/off

fn + f12 turns scroll lock on/off

My HP Pavillion M70 monitor is saying "video cable connected?" when I try to use the monitor. I am trying to output my laptop to the monitor because my laptop screen is wearing out, but I cannot get it to...

go into the BIOS settings and tell it to use the LCD/Monitor as a display.

or

press fn key+(F5 or F7 or F8) 1x or 2x or 3x.....

Fn key combination. The Fn key is located at the lower left of the keyboard, normally between the CTRL and the ALT key. Toshiba uses Fn-F5 to toggle between the laptop LCD and an external display. IBM or Lenovo uses FN-F7, Acer varies with the model, using Fn-F5, Fn-F3, Fn-F8, Sony Fn-F7, Dell Fn-F8, HP or Compaq, Fn-F4. There are variations with the age of the laptop and not all manufacturers have standardized on a key combo across the whole range, but you can usually figure it out from the little graphics on the function keys that line the top of the keyboard.

I need an explanation as to the secondary function of the keys on my NB305. Mainly the top row of 'F' keys, but the remainder of the keyboard as well. What do all these little symbols on the keys mean?

F1 through F12 are called function keys because they execute programmed functions when pressed. Used in combination with the Fn key, keys marked with icons execute specific functions on the computer. The function executed by individual keys depends on the software you are using.

1. Sound Mute: Pressing Fn + ESC in a windows environment turns sound on or off. Press Fn + Enter to simulate Enter or the enhanced keyboard's numeric keypad. 2. Instant security: Press Fn + F1 to blank the screen to prevent others from accessing your data. To restore the screen and original setting, press any key or press the Touch Pad. 3. Power save mode: Pressing Fn + F2 changes the power save mode. 4. Standby: When you press Fn + F3, the computer enters Standby. 5. Hibernation: When you press Fn + F4, the computer enters Hibernation. 6. Display selection: Press Fn + F5 to change the active display device. Hold down Fn and press F5 again to change the device. 7. Internal LCD screen Brightness: Pressing Fn + F6 decreases the display brightness in decrements. 8. Internal LCD screen Brightness: Pressing Fn + F7 increases the display brightness in increments. 9. Wireless setting: If your computer has both Bluetooth and Wireless LAN functions, you can press Fn + F8 to select which type of wireless communication you want to use. 10. Touch Pad: Pressing Fn + F9 in a windows environment enables or disables the Touch Pad function. 11. Press Fn + F10 or Fn + F11 to access the integrated keypad. When activated, the keys with gray markings on the bottom edge become numeric keypad keys (Fn + F11) or cursor control keys (Fn + F10). The power on default for both settings is off. Press Fn + F12 (ScrLock) to lock the cursor on a specific line. The power on default is off. 12. TOSHIBA Zooming Utility (reduce): To reduce the icon size on the desktop or the application window, press the 1 key while holding down the Fn key. (13. TOSHIBA Zooming Utility (enlarge): To enlarge the icon size on the desktop or the application window, press the 2 key while holding down the Fn key.
