The reason being is because I have tried connecting through my browser but it ask for a user name and password that I do not know. I tried resetting my router and still can not figure out what my user name and password are.
    I have tried:
    User name Password
    admin admin
    blank admin
    admin blank

and still can't seem to crack it.

Step 1: If you have forgotten your LinkSysI do not have the Linksys CD to install the - 2_bing.gif router password, the easiest thing to do is to reset your router to the factory default settings.
To restore the router configuration to factory defaults, hold the reset button on the unit for 30 seconds. Step 2: Once your router is hard reset, you will need to login and reconfigure it again.
To reconfigure your LinkSys, connect a PC to one of it's Ethernet ports, load a web browser, and go to the URL http://192.168.1.1/. This will take you to a popup box which asks you to enter a username and password to login to your router. Note: On older LinkSys routers, the default username is blank and the default password is "admin." On newer Linksys routers, both the default username and the default password are set to "admin."
Once you are past the login screen, you are able to reconfigure the LinkSys router. You want to go to the management tab and change the administrator password to something else to keep others from accessing your router. Step 3: After changing the administrator password then you will need to enable WEP or WAP security so your neighbors aren't tapping into your wireless network. :)

You don't need some kind of software to control your router, all you have to do is to connect with your browser (e.g. Internet explorer) to a specific i.p.adress. Take care in case you're going to change the security settings for your wireless internet, I suggest you try changing the seettings with a computer physically connected to the router (that means by cable), so in case of an error you will not keep out yourself.

The default compination for your router is USERNAME:(none), PASSWORD:admin. As you mentioned you have tried this. In case they didn't work, reset the router from tha small button and try to log-in again with the default credentials.

Let me try not to repeat but just make things clear.
To restore the router configuration to factory defaults, hold the reset button on the unit for 30 seconds. To reconfigure your LinkSys, connect a PC to one of it's Ethernet ports, load a web browser, and go to the URLhttp://192.168.1.1/. This will take you to a popup box which asks you to enter a username and password to login to your router. On older LinkSys routers, the default username is blank and the default password is "admin". On newer Linksys routers, both the default username and the default password are set to "admin" and both user mane and password are case sensitive. If none of the above work and in any case that your modem and your router are two seperated devices, disconnect the modem first. Otherwisehttp://192.168.1.1 tries to get to the modem, not the router.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply.

Router setup
You do not have to use the cd. Go to the control panel and un-install the program that the cd installed. then:
Shutdown your PC. Unplug the power from the router and the cable modem.
Wait 30 sec. then plug in the power to the cable modem, wait 30 sec. then plug the power to the router. Wait till you have "Internet" light then restart your PC. The PC should pick up an IP address and you should be able to get on-line. This is if you have a cable service provider. If you have DSL, the router needs to be configured with PPOe.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response.

Thanks, Joe

I bought a linksys wireless router but I have a notebook not cd player so how do I download it ppl say there is a free download

So to make this clear, you need the Linksys installation software? If this is the case, go to linksys website and there should be a link with drivers and downloads. Put your model in there and download the software needed to run your linksys router. Let me know if this helps

I misplaced the installation and configuration CD and now have purchased a new computer. I can't get connected. Where can I purchase a new CD?

Go to: http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/home

Click on Support in the upper menu.

There are drop down menus for you to choose your product and you will be presented with all the download information for that product.

However, they also have this program with a free trial download that might help you:
http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/CNMESS

And I have used their former Easy Connect Advisor but they no longer offer that free. I did find a download here:
http://linksys-easylink-advisor.software.informer.com/3.1/

But you may want to make sure you scan the file with your security software before you install it just to be safe. It appears to be safe.

My cd rom wont read the disc

Here is a link to Linksys's section (with downloads) on that particular router. http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/WRT54G/ <br> If you are just trying to modify the settings of the router, you do not need software to do that other than a web browser. Start your internet browser of choice and type in the URL box 192.168.100.1 which should bring up your modem's settings.

Well i had just bought a lynksys router from my friend with no software cd so right now i am trying to download the software online so when i switch my cox modem with the linksys modem i want the software...

You should be able to get any software that you need from LinkSys.com but I have a couple of quick questions first:

1. Is the LinkSys unit you just purchased a router or modem?

If the unit is a router, you are still going to need a Cox compatible modem. If the unit is a modem, you will still need a router to complete the network setup unless LinkSys makes a combination cable router/modem, and I haven't been able to research one.

2. If it is a modem, is it a cable modem and, if it is, is it Cox compatible?

According to the Cox Web Site, the only models of LinkSys modems that are currently compatible with the Cox High Speed Cable Internet Service are:

BEFCMU10 v3
BEFCMU10 v4
WCG200
WCG200 v2
CM100

In this particular case, you may need to contact LinkSys and/or your Internet Service Provider. In most cases, they will not only tell you exactly what type of equipment you need, they will also talk you through setting up the network once you have the equipment - usually at no charge.
