Question about KitchenAid Microwave Ovens

2 Answers

We have a kitchenaid mod kbhc109jss0 (8 yrs old) that smokes but does not cook, when turned on.

The first expert did not address the issue of the microwave smoking when turned on. He/she basically said that I should have a professional repair person assess it. I'm sure that's right.

What I want is to know if my microwave is likely to be repair-able or if I should toss it and buy a new one, without paying for an expensive service call.
    Thanks,
    Fred Fajen

    Thank you for your advice.

However, I probably shouldn't have wasted my money consulting you. I should have known that I needed to call in a professional repair person.

Hello,

truly, the fault is not what you can fix yourself. You certainly need the help of a repairer.

The smoke is also know as carbon monoxides, this is a common problem.

Concerning the repairs, you have to compare the price of repair, with the price of purchasing another kitchen aid. If the cost of repairs is not too expensive, then it would be better you repair it, but it the cost of repairs is very expensive, then you will have to toss it off and get another one.

In other words, the cost of repairs will determine whether you should get another one or not.

Take care.

Hi
Usually, when your microwave oven doesn't work it all, the internal fuse (thermal fuse) is blown. This fuse protects both you and the oven. When it blows, you need to have a qualified appliance repair technician to replace it.
If the fuse isn't the problem, check the door hooks and the door-release button. When these are broken, the door switch doesn't activate, so the oven can't work.
When the microwave sounds okay, but there's no heat, one of the internal door switches, the high voltage circuitry, or the circuit board may have a problem. To resolve this problem, you need the assistance of a qualified appliance repair technician.
Please check this link given bellow to have an indepth knowledge about your prblem…

KITCHENAID are a budget make despite what you paid. it is better to buy a company that specialises in microwave ovens rather that a company that buys cheaply made products in China or Taiwan and badges them. As you know KitchinAid is a company that does all sorts of kitchen gadgets and utensils. Toshiba and Panasonic are the brand leaders. GE are long established.

The problem with yours sounds like a safety interlock problem. Every microwave has about 4 safety switches attached to the door so that it is impossible for the unit to be run with the door open. They are small micro-switches that are adjusted like a hair trigger so that as soon as the door moves, power cuts. If it is the switch, it is a cheap fix, if it is the Magnetron, it isn't, so diagnosis is needed by a reputable company. You can't take it apart as they use security screws because of the dangers of cooking yourself and the high voltages in the capacitor, and poisonous Beryllium in the magnetron. Your call on fixing or buying new.

Our kitchenaid microwave, sparks when we turn it on.

If the sparks are happening on the inside of the microwave's cooking area while you are cooking, then make sure you clean the inner surfaces really well. Be sure to remove any cooked on food particles that may have splashed up during cooking.

If the cleaning does not work, you may need to replace the waveguide cover. Click on the following Youtube video link for an instructional video on the process:

If the sparks are coming from somewhere other that the cooking area, then your unit may need more significant electrical repairs or service.

Thank you very much and good luck.

New sanyo microwave, steam or smoke coming out when cooking from 1 minute

Steam is OK as it means whatever is in there is boiling furiously, it may need turning off at that point!
Smoke though means it has gone too far. Check the cooking times used and the recommended cooking times on the packet along with the adjustment for the power of your oven.

Microwave Arcing

The metal shelf that comes with most microwave ovens must NEVER come in contact with any surface of the cavity wall or arcing will occur. (this is why its is mounted on plastic clips). IF you are not using the shelf to cook multiple items (as most people don't)....Remove the shelf and store somewhere else until needed.

Does a microwave lose cooking power over time? having a problem cooking popcorn. whirlpool built in unit 18 yrs old. takes 4-5 min on high and cant cook most of it. more time just burs popcorn. i believe...

Yes. As the magnetron (The microwave generator) ages with use it becomes less efficient. As such it produces less powerful microwaves and loses penetrating power:::Spiceweasel.au
