Engine will not fire {no spark }

I have a 18.5 Briggs Stratton engine. I have replaced battery, spark plugs, magneto, fresh gas, fuel filter air cleaner ignition swich and still will not fire.
I am wondering if the pto switch will keep it from firing? All wires in wiring harness connects to the pto switch. It has 4 terminals on it. the wire from the magneto leads to this switch.

Did you sand the rust off of the flywheel? where the magneto is. And did you set it right? It has to be real close to the flywheel. The thickness of two pieces of paper. And yes the pto switch will keep it from starting. If it is ingaged it wont start. Can you hear it enganging when you connect the battery? Try turning switch on and off see if it will kick in and out. With key on

Craftsman 675 series 190 cc lawn mower Wont start

Take air cleaner off. Shoot some spray carburetor cleaner in the carburetor and try to start Try this a few times to see if the engine will fire.. If it fires or starts then there is a fuel delivery problem. Could be a dirty fuel filter, bad (stale) gas, a dirty carburetor. If it does not start with the carb cleaner, check the spark plug. It may be fouled. Check for spark - take plug out of head. with the plug attached to plug wire, hold plug with a pair of insulated pliers, and touch outside of plug where the threads are to the engine, while some one pulls on the start cord. You should get a bluish spark. If you get a weak spark use a new plug and try again. There should be a bluish spark. Make sure you hold the plug against the engine making good contact. If no spark at all, could a bad magneto.

Getting back to the carburetor. If you think the gas in the tank is stale, drain it out and put fresh gas in the tank. Change the gas filter.
The arburator may be cleaned by pouring a 1/2 can of fuel system cleaner in the gas tank and spraying the spray cleaner down the carburetor throat.

Sears Craftsman mower 17hp Briggs & Stratton engine. Replaced starter, spark plug and fuel filter. Will not turn over unless jump started. When running has no power.

Charge battery to 12.8 volts or higher. 13.2 best. Below 12.8 volts replace battery. USE FRESH GAS ONLY. Always use Stabile in gas. Ensure oil is full. 30w. Clean or replace air filter.

Suggest start w/ the basics : Air, Fuel, & Spark. Internet search indicates that it's a Briggs & Stratton engine, which I just worked on yesterday (165 cc version). Easiest things first - ensure that there is FRESH fuel in the tank. If it's been sitting there all year, drain it out and refill with new fuel. (make sure you follow mfgr's recommended fuel type.) If you have a primer pump, make sure you can hear fuel flowing when you depress it (typically 3 - 6 pushes to prime the engine). If not, then youi may have a fuel line or fuel filter clogged. If you remove cowling/covering over top of engin, you can get access to the air cleaner. Remove the air cleaner/filter, and you can see into the carbuerator. This should make it easy to see if the primer pump is squirting fuel when depressed. While the air filter is out, make sure it is clean. If gunked up, I usually soak it and wring it out in fresh fuel, then let it air dry to clean it out (mine is made of foam). If it's a cartridge type air filter, blow it out w/ compressed air, or put a new one in if it's dirty. Lastly, if you have an assistant, you can check to see if you're getting a spark. Remove the spark plug, inspect if for correct gap and overall condition - remedy if you see something wrong. Then with it out, connect the spark plug cable (the high voltage line) to the top of the plug. Now, while touching the threaded part of the spark plug to a bare metal part of the engine case or lawnmower chassis, have your helper pull the starter cord and look at the plug's gap for a series of sparks.

If you don't see any sparks jumping the spark plug gap, you may have a bad plug, bad cable, too big a gap, or a bad magneto, or corroded connection to the top of the plug.

If you don't have fuel flow, you may have a clogged fuel line or fuel filter.

Air flow is pretty basic, so with the air cleaner removed, it should be pretty obvious if you have an airflow restriction. You can leave off the air cleaner/filter to troubleshoot the engine and to start it, just don't operate the mower without it, or you risk sucking in junk, rocks, you name it, into your engine.

THis may go without saying, but also inspect all linkages, springs, cables, etc. IF you see something loose or broken, check the owners manual or diagrams and remedy that. Also check out the Troubleshooting section in the owner's maual (available on-line at Husqvarna)

My problem yesterday was very simply BAD, OLD GAS. Briggs & Stratton make a pretty reliable, easy to start lawnmower engine. But even that's not enough if you're feeding it bad or contaminated gas.

Have a 5600 Gen. with 10 HP B/S engine OHV. Did great during Rita, replaced carb- changed gas-replaced plug- doesn't want to fire it seems. Where Can I find the magneto ? Are there points on the flywheel...

The magneto is by the flywheel. Depending on the age, there maybe points under the flywheel. If so you remove the flywheel and there the points are. Sometimes bugs build cacoons between points, make them inoperable. Newer engines have electronic ignition though. Follow the small wire from the magneto coil ( where the spark plug wire goes) it will either go under the flywheel through a plastic bushing, or to an electronic module. The magneto coils do fail you can test with an ohm meter. Before that test for spark. You can remove the spark plug, and let it rest on the engine to get ground, and turn the engine over. You always need 1-spark, 2 fuel . If you have spark, see if it will hit on starting fluid, if it does, then you have a carb or fuel filter issue. Those shut off valves on the bottom of those tanks, can be a problem

check gas tank with light is there dirt in tank? did you change fuel filter? is there spark at the spark plug? try a 2 second spurt of starting fluid in carburetor and crank does it fire?if it does then you most likely need to clean carburetor with carburetor cleaning spray, flush fuel lines with spray and swap fuel filter.

Craftsman 21'' Lawn mower won't start

In order for there to be a spark at the plug, make sure the plug is grounded to the engine, it will not "fire" if it isn't.

Remove the cover with the crankrope, there should be a thin black wire going to the coil, going to a ground lug that kills the engine. Try unplugging this wire and re-check the fire...if it fires, there is a fault in this wire and should be replaced. The mower will run without it, but will not stop without "choking" out the engine
