SOURCE: printer self calibrating...
This is most likely caused by the toner being low. Change the cart manually with the machine turned off. Open the cart door (not cart d'or - no ice cream here!!) and you will see on the left side there is an interlock which you can push in using a screw driver or similar object. Once pushed in you can rotate the carousel to the relevant point to change the carts. Ensure the tram lines down the sides line up correctly and that you fully insert the cart before turning the carts to the open position. Once changed, power up the machine and I'm sure you should be back in business.

(bottom left corner windows START)
start/settings/printers/ and click
right click your printer and select printing preferences
click on the tab that says SERVICES
then click on the services icon button (picture)
you will see three choices;
print a test page.
Aligning is what you want.(calibration is just a different word)
You can also remove the ink cartridges as you usually do and then put them back in, this triggers and automatic printed page and then walks you through scanning and the alignment.*s*
if by chance you still have blurry printing and know your machine should be ok, try cleaning.( same procedure, different last choice- you clean the heads)
You can also check to see if the proper paper is selected. For instance, if you are trying to print heavy greeting card paper it must be set to that or it will not print properly. *s*
If you have thrown up your hands and tried all this, and nothing works. Go through your printer preferences and select SET DEFAULT SETTINGS buttons.
It will knock everything back to the way it left the factory *S*
Thank you and good luck. Please remember to give my answer a rating *S*

There is a chip in each toner cartridge which tells the main machine something about how full it is. It may be that it tells it how full it is, or it may be that it tells it how many pages it has done. It sounds as if the new black cartridge has a duff chip, and is telling the main machine that it is empty. To test this, you can overide the message. 1. press on the menu button;
2. select configure;
3. select maintenance;
4. select non-dell toner;
5. set the value to on.
If that does't work, get back to me.
