DVD player worked fine for about two years, then started to reject standard and good quality dvds as being "unkown" and, therefore, it now rejects them without playing.

I would suggest using a dvd/cd lens cleaner.

DVD player not working!

The player uses a laser to check for a DVD. If the laser fails, the player acts like there is no DVD loaded and opens the disc tray so a DVD can be inserted. Sounds like a bad laser.

Some dvds no longer play

well, seems like your laser diode is getting old. you need to change the diode. what you are experiencing is the start of a dying diod. it will start to rejects cd and soon enough it will not spind at all on all the cd's. so change the emitting diode. good luck
