Did you set your calculator's format in to a fraction? If you did, change the calculator's format in to decimal.

Two choices: Press the MODE key a number of times until you get to the "Fix Sci Norm" screen, press 3 to select "Norm" and then press 1 or 2 to select one of the norm modes.

Press the MODE key a number of times until you get to the "Fix Sci Norm" screen, press 1 to select "Fix" and then press a digit specifying the number of digits you want after the decimal point.

If you need a manual you may download a copy here. The display modes are discussed on page E-15.

Convert decimal fraction to binary

None of these solutions answer his question. When converting a fraction or any number with decimal places to Binary, the TI-89 gives "Error: Domain error." For example, entering .6875 [2ND][MATH][BASE][BIN] does not work. I haven't found a way to do it with built in functions. In order to do these types of conversions, I use the following method.

Convert: 0.6875 to Binary
- left of decimal is a 0, so write down a 0, then a decimal point: (0.)
- multiply .6875 x 2 = 1.375 left of decimal is 1, write a 1: (0.1)
- drop the 1 and multiply .375 x 2 = .75 left of decimal is 0. write a 0: (0.10)
- multiply .75 x 2 = 1.5 left of decimal is 1, write a 1: (0.101)

- drop the 1, multiple .5 x 2 = 1. left of decimal is 1, write a 1: (0.1011).
- since there is no more fraction, the final answer is (0.1011). Hope this helps.

I have a casio fx-300ES calculator. It gives all answers as improper fractions. How do I make it give decimal answers?

Hi suebie50

Have a great day.

To change the output to decimal form, you can do the following:
Go to Math mode, then SHIFT, MODE (set-up), 2 (lineIO).

The answer will show in decimal format.

You can also use this website whenever you have further questions in using you calculator:

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using fixya.

Hi, I have a Sharp ELW535 Calculator and by accident I changed the mode that it is in... so now it gives me a fraction answer and not decimal. Ex, I put in 52/48 it gives me 1 1/12 Do you know how to fix...

There is nothing to fix as what you describe is not a flaw, it is a feature. You calculator has a key marked CHANGE between (x,y) key and ) key. To change a result from fraction to decimal or from decimal to fraction, you press the CHANGE key.

I am not sure what my calculator is doing I am trying to solve a regular math problem such as (.0011)(2.4) and it keeps giving me 2.64 x 10 to the -03 power

You have your calculator set to give your answer in scientific notation. If you would like it to give your answer in decimal form you need to change the settings. On my calculator which is an older version, you just press [mode] three times. On your screen you will see fix sci and norm as well as the numerals 1, 2 and 3. press [3] on your key pad. You should see norm 1~2? then press [2] on your keypad and this will have changed your settings back to plain decimals.
I hope this helps!

When I divided a problem EX. 3/2 the calculator will not answer in decimal

Hi,
You are not dividing problems, you are dividing number. This said, there is a simple way to ensure that the results of divisions are displayed in decimal form: It consists in putting a decimal mark (decimal point) at the end one integer (whole number)
ex:
3/2. gives 1.5
3./2 gives 1.5
3./2. gives 1.5

You can also configure your calculator to display all numerical results in decimal format. To do that press [MODE][F2]. Use the down arrow to select the ligne Exact/Approx, then use the right arrow to unfold the menu options 1:Auto
2:Exact
3:Approximate
Select 3:Approximate and press [ENTER]

Hope it helps.

TI-89 decimal to fraction

Here is what you do:

1) Press the Mode button.
2) Scroll down the list that appears until you find "Exact/Approx".
3) Change the setting for "Exact/Approx" to Exact.
4) Press enter to save the settings change.

You have three possible settings for "Exact/Approx":
1) Auto - The calculator will try to determine the best format.
2) Exact - The calculator will always give the answer in fraction form.
3) Approximate - The calculator will always give the answer in decimal form.

When I divide the answer is in fraction form not decimal form how do i get it back

There are two options.

1) Whenever you want the answer in decimal form, place a decimal after at least one of the numbers.
For example: instead of using (1/2) use (1/2.)

2) Press the "Mode" button. Scroll down the list that appears until you find "Exact/Approx". If you set it to "Approximate", then it will always give the answer in decimal form. If you set it to "Exact", it will give the answer in fraction form.

When I divide answers are always given in Fractions. Can I change it to come out in decimals?

To change from Fraction display to Decimal display on the Casio fx-300ES (and probably other calculators)

1) Press the "SHIFT" button
2) Press the "MODE/SETUP" button
3) Press the "2" button
This Changes it to LINEIO (Decimal)

Doing all of the above but pressing the "1" button instead of the "2" puts it back into MATHIO mode (Fraction)

Hope this Helps

Multiplication error(?) with repeating decimal place fractions.

Hello,
You may have guessed right. The presence of the parentheses makes the content of the parentheses evaluated first. So there is a loss of precision.
On the Ti92 I do 7*(-1/7)+1 and find 0.
But with Floating mode set at 12 decimal digits I get
1/7.=.142857142857.
Then .142857142857.*(-7) + 1 gives 2E-14.
Try to calculate pi*(-1/pi) +1 or e*(1/e)+1.
Hope it answers your question.
