Question about Canon PIXMA MP980 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

When turning on the printer, the scanner does not scan across the glass - the cable vibrates and the scanner does not move. Error 5011 is displayed on the LCD and the printer must be turned off. Unable to use any of the other features

the cable vibrating could be a sign of the motor working, possibly the scanner light is stuck. if you are in warranty, I would recommend to take advantage of it... If you are outside of warranty or wish to attempt to repair it yourself anyway then what I would personally try is to take open the top part of the scanner to get access to the scanner that moves (you will have to unscrew a certain number of screws), try to help it along or move it just a bit so it wouldn't be on the default resting location, it should reset automatically back to its normal position.

When taking apart the printer make sure its unplugged or the power is turned off at the wall, you may also try - while the top cover is open, to power it back on and then do a scan, then try helping the scanner to move a bit, if its stuck help it unstuck.

Make sure you only touch plastic parts while the power is on, with the power off attempt to move the scanner out from the side to the center, if it makes noise or seems to be damaging to the printer only move it a small distance to minimize any harm done by doing so.

Once you get it moving, if you are getting a error message still, try turning it off at the wall again, or perform this reset shown on this video and put the printer back together as it was.

I am getting a blue line on my scans when utilizing the feeder

The feeder sends the original across a small piece of glass. The scanner stays in one position as the paper runs across it rather than the scanner moving and paper staying still. The little piece of glass is probably a 1/2 inch by 12 inch glass. just clean that strip of glass. use alcohol. there is probably some whiteout on the glass. It will appear as a dot. When the paper runs across it, the dot is run across the whole page causing the line. if you cant find the strip of glass, run a scan and try to see where the scan light sits while it's running. Clean everywhere where the light sits.

Canon MP480- 5011 - Printer Error Has Occurred After Scan/Prt

You need to carefully clean the encoder strip. It's the clear strip behind the carriage that runs all the way from right to left. A damp Q-tip should remove any grease or fingerprints.

M2727 scanner error 5 - same problem

The step motor likely needs replacing. (Do you hear the motor moving when you turn the scanner back on after you move the scanner head to the right?) (Need to lift the small glass to push it across a bit.!)
This is replaced as part of the scanner assembly:

Scan error cannot connect

Is there is a **** in the scan head or possibly a humming noise each time you try to scan that then stops? If so, most likely the gear assembly that moves scanner across the glass surface is damaged.

If there is no recognition at all then it may be related to the software. Try to uninstall, move the device to a difference USB port, reinstall, and reattach the device. Then be careful when plugging and unplugging the device, changing the USB will sometimes corrupt the device profile.

Scanner doesn't work

If you've tried the printer on different PCs and still didn't work looks like there is something wrong with the scanner internally. When you start the scanner fresh, the scanning light has to move up and down the glass if it doesn't may be something is stuck on the mechanism open it and check for lose cables or dirt. Other option will be that If you bought it on the last 11 months try send it for "Manufacturer's Warranty Repair" you can call HP costumer service and ask them where you can send your unit for service, make sure you use a traceable method and keep records. Or take it to the nearest dealer and have them look at it.
